{"id":94047,"date":"2023-03-03T18:50:41","date_gmt":"2023-03-03T18:50:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=94047"},"modified":"2023-03-03T18:51:01","modified_gmt":"2023-03-03T18:51:01","slug":"world-bank-estimates-syrias-earthquake-damage-at-1-5-billion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/94047\/","title":{"rendered":"World Bank estimates Syria&#8217;s earthquake damage at $1.5 billion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>In a report publicized on Friday by the World Bank Global Rapid Assessment the direct damage of the February 6 earthquake in Syria is estimated at $1.5 billion away from broader economic impacts and losses for the country&#8217;s economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World Bank&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/press-release\/2023\/02\/28\/earthquake-direct-damage-in-syria-estimated-at-5-1-billion-in-areas-already-severely-ravaged-by-long-conflict-and-displa?s=09\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a> said that the earthquake &#8220;caused an estimated $5.1 billion in direct physical damages in Syria&#8221; and that four governorates \u2013 Aleppo, Hama, Latakia and Idlib \u2013 where about 10 million Syrians reside received drastic damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At dawn on Feb. 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Syria and Turkey, killing thousands and injuring much more. The earthquake also caused immense destruction of buildings, trapping thousands under the rubble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Syria Global Rapid Post-Disaster Damage Estimation (GRADE) Report gives &#8220;a broad, preliminary assessment of the direct physical damages in Syria and their spatial distribution,&#8221; but without covering broader economic impacts and losses for the Syrian economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The GRADE report revealed that the severely affected governorate is Aleppo with 45 percent estimated damage, followed by Idlib with a 37 percent damage, and Latakia with 11 percent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Syrian government has declared the areas worst affected by Feb. 6\u2019s deadly earthquakes \u2013 Latakia, Hama, Aleppo and Idlib \u2013 as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/92687\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disaster zones<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report also estimated damages to residential buildings at about 48.5 percent, damages in non-residential buildings at 33.5 percent, and infrastructure damages at 18 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese losses compound years of destruction, suffering and hardship the people of Syria have been enduring over the past years,\u201d said Jean-Christophe Carret, World Bank Country Director for the Middle East Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting by Saya Muhammad &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 In a report publicized on Friday by the World Bank Global Rapid Assessment the direct damage of the February 6 earthquake in Syria is estimated at $1.5 billion away from broader economic impacts and losses for the country&#8217;s economy.
