AFRIN, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>The Turkish-backed local council Afrin, northwestern Syria, seized more than 50 tents that were stored in its relief office meant for people affected by the devastating earthquake that hit the region on Feb. 6. <\/p>\n\n\n\n A local source told North Press that around 50 families were affected by the earthquake in the town of Bulbul, north of Afrin, and have not received tents despite repeated requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At dawn on Feb. 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit northwestern Syria and southern Turkey, killing about 50.000 individuals and injuring much more. The earthquake also caused immense destruction of buildings, trapping thousands under the rubble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The tents were supposed to be placed in shelters in the town. However, the council, without clarifying the reason, canceled a previous decision to establish shelters to hold the affected population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The source added that there is “constant theft” of aid meant for affected people by the local council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On Feb. 8, the local council in Afrin was raided by earthquake-affected locals after its relief office refused to distribute their designated shares of aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Kurdish-city of Afrin in Aleppo northern countryside has been under the occupation of Turkey since March 2018 following a military operation dubbed “Olive Branch” by the Turkish forces and their affiliated armed opposition factions, also known as Syrian National Army (SNA), to push away the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) under the pretext of protecting the Turkish “national security.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n AFRIN, Syria (North Press) \u2013 The Turkish-backed local council Afrin, northwestern Syria, seized more than 50 tents that were stored in its relief office meant for people affected by the devastating earthquake that hit the region on Feb. 6.
