{"id":93747,"date":"2023-02-27T08:34:11","date_gmt":"2023-02-27T08:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=93747"},"modified":"2023-02-27T08:34:13","modified_gmt":"2023-02-27T08:34:13","slug":"anger-in-turkey-over-selling-tents-to-quake-charity-by-red-crescent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/93747\/","title":{"rendered":"Anger in Turkey over selling tents to quake charity by Red Crescent"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>The Turkish opposition and media outlets strongly criticized the Turkish Red Crescent, Turkey&#8217;s largest charity, for selling tents to the victims of the Feb.6 earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria instead of donating them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cumhuriyet daily newspaper broke the story, as it confirmed in a report that the Turkish Red Crescent had sold 2.050 tents to the Turkish local AHBAP charity for $2.4 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Feb. 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkey and northwestern Syria, killing about 50.000 individuals and destroying hundreds of buildings, leaving many homeless. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a scandal, Turkey&#8217;s largest charity, the Red Crescent, sold tents instead of distributing them for free to those in need,\u201d said Murat Agirel, the Cumhuriyet journalist who wrote the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kerem Kinik, head of the Turkish Red Crescent tweeted that they had provided the tents to Ahbap charity at \u201ccost price\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Red Crescent&#8217;s cooperation with Ahbap is moral, reasonable and ethical,\u201d Kinik added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But his statements did not stop the outcry in the media outlets as several opposition figures called for the resignation of the Red Crescent chairman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Shame on you,&#8221; Meral Aksener, chairwoman of the nationalist Iyi Party, said on Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of condemning the tents\u2019 bargain, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused those criticizing the Red Crescent as \u201cdishonest and vile\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, the leader of the main opposition party, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, accused Erdogan in a tweet of \u201cinsulting the earthquake victims\u201d. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the massive earthquake, not just the Red Crescent but also the Turkish government itself was accused of failing to provide the needed assistants to quake victims in several locations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting by Shella Abdulhalim<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 The Turkish opposition and media outlets strongly criticized the Turkish Red Crescent, Turkey&#8217;s largest charity, for selling tents to the victims of the Feb.6 earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria instead of donating them.
