The earthquake also caused immense destruction of buildings, trapping thousands under the rubble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hundreds of extra border guards began patrolling the Greek-Turkish land frontier in the Evros region at the weekend as contingency measures were stepped up to stave off the expected flows, <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/feb\/26\/greece-fortifies-border-to-block-refugees-from-turkish-syrian-earthquakes#amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&amp;aoh=16774481373190&amp;referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Guardian reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The patrols were dispatched as Greece\u2019s Minister of Migration, Notis Mitarachi, called for the enhanced protection of the frontiers with increased surveillance infrastructure and additional fences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe mass movement of millions of people is not a solution,\u201d said Greece\u2019s Minister of Migration, Notis Mitarachi, emphasizing the need for emergency aid to be sent to Turkey and Syria \u201cbefore this happens\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is expected that some of the homeless by the Feb. 6 earthquake will start heading towards Europe in the spring if humanitarian assistance does not arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, despite fortifying patrols, great numbers of refugees are risking life and limb by circumventing the Greek isles to travel in vastly overcrowded boats from Turkey to Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sunday, a wooden boat crowded with migrants smashed into rocky reefs and broke apart off the Italian coast.
