{"id":87371,"date":"2022-11-16T08:53:17","date_gmt":"2022-11-16T08:53:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=87371"},"modified":"2022-11-16T08:53:18","modified_gmt":"2022-11-16T08:53:18","slug":"canada-rejects-repatriating-nationals-from-camps-in-ne-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/87371\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada rejects repatriating nationals from camps in NE Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>The Canadian government detailed its legal position for the first time regarding Canadians captured during the fight against Islamic State Organization (ISIS) in Syria, in response to a lawsuit by families of the detainees. <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It would be \u201cunprecedented and unprincipled\u201d to help Canadian ISIS suspects detained in northeastern Syria, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/9279009\/government-rejects-returning-canadians-isis-syria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global News<\/a> said, citing the federal government as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The detainees\u2019 families want the Federal Court to order Ottawa to bring the detainees back to Canada from camps run by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), according to the source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sally Lane, mother of Jack Letts, a Canadian man detained in northeastern Syria, called on the federal government to send a delegate overseas to help free her son and other Canadians detained in &#8220;atrocious conditions.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lane accused the federal government of doing \u201cprecisely nothing\u201d to secure her son&#8217;s release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe case should be dismissed, since accepting the families\u2019 claims would improperly extend the Charter of Rights beyond Canada\u2019s borders,\u201d the source added, citing federal lawyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In late November, officials of Foreign Affairs Department in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria received an official Canadian delegation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The delegation included Sebastien Beaulieu, Director of Security and Emergency Management for Global Affairs of Canada, Rasta Daei, Head of Office of Embassy of Canada in Syria and Lebanon, and Tariq Gordon, Deputy Director of Threat Assessment Division in Canada\u2019s Global Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/86281\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">On October 26<\/a>, Canada\u2019s Ministry of Global Affairs repatriated four nationals of ISIS family members from camps in northeastern Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, <a href=\"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/86328\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a day later<\/a>, Canadian police arrested the repatriated two women, as one of whom charged with four terrorism-related offences, including working for ISIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its defense against the legal action by their families in Federal Court, the government said they were being held for their alleged affiliation to a terrorist organization and Canada was not required to help them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The federal lawyers insisted in their argument that \u201cthe government was not duty-bound to repatriate Canadians detained abroad, and had not breached their rights by failing to do so,\u201d according to the source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government lawyers argued that would be \u201can unprincipled and far-reaching expansion of the extra-territorial application of the Charter\u201d and \u201cshould be rejected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting by Emma Jamal<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 The Canadian government detailed its legal position for the first time regarding Canadians captured during the fight against Islamic State Organization (ISIS) in Syria, in response to a lawsuit by families of the detainees.
