{"id":70263,"date":"2022-01-04T12:51:34","date_gmt":"2022-01-04T12:51:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=70263"},"modified":"2022-01-04T12:51:41","modified_gmt":"2022-01-04T12:51:41","slug":"two-years-after-soleimanis-killing-iraq-bears-the-brunt-of-iran-allies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/70263\/","title":{"rendered":"Two years after Soleimani\u2019s killing, Iraq bears the brunt of Iran allies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> The Iraqi capital Baghdad and some other Iraqi governorates declared a national holiday in the second anniversary of the killing of Major General Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of Iran&#8217;s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and Abu Mahdi al-Mohandes, the deputy head of Iraq&#8217;s Hashd al-Shaabi militia (Popular Mobilization Forces\/ PMF).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On January 3, 2020, a US drone strike near Baghdad International Airport killed Soleimani and al-Mohandes along with other escorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the second anniversary, supporters of&nbsp;PMF and Iran took to the streets and held public funerals chanting anti-American slogans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Presidential Office of Iraq released a statement as saying\u201con the second anniversary of the martyrdom of the leaders of victory, the deputy head of the Popular Mobilization Forces, Hajj Abu Mahdi Al-Mohandes, and the great Iranian leader, Hajj Qasem Soleimani, we remember with honor the brave stand of the two heroes and their response in the difficult circumstances, and their bravery to defeat the most brutal attack that ISIS embodied with its malicious plans, sacrificing their precious souls to protect the holy land from the desecration of the dark terrorists\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Iraqi authorities scaled up the security procedures. Checkpoints were set up in junctions of the highways in Baghdad specially in the vicinity of the Green Zone (the most common name for the&nbsp;InternationalZone&nbsp;of&nbsp;Baghdad) where diplomatic headquarters lies, including the US embassy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day before, i.e. on January 2, supporters of PMF staged a demonstration near the Baghdad International Airport holding posters of Soleimani and al-Mohandes and flags of the PMF and lit candles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carcass of the charred vehicle which was driving the two men was brought to the site, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also on January 1, thousands of supporters of PMF gathered in the central of Baghdad to commemorate the second anniversary of the two commanders&#8217; assassination. Leaders of the PMF renewed calls to the withdrawal of foreign forces from Iraq, i.e. the US forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is worth mentioning that tensions between the US and Iran surged during the time of the Us former president Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was concern that Iraq would be an arena for the war between Iran and the US in the wake of the two commanders&#8217; assassination.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">40 days after the two commanders\u2019 assassination, Iran\u2019s response came as Iran targeted American sites in Ayn al-Asad airbase as well as other positions in Erbil. 100 US soldiers were injured due to the extreme sound of explosions. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Repercussion on Iraq <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US diplomats and soldiers were targeted in Iraq during the last two years by dozens of rockets and drone attacks, which targeted around the US embassy in Baghdad or Iraqi military bases, Ayn al-Asad airbase and Erbil International Airport.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But at Biden\u2019s era the tension decreased by the end of 2021 especially, as the US and Iraq reached agreement for the first time in July according to the USA president.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the agreement, Iraq formally ends the US combats mission in Iraq by the end of 2021, and that their role will be advising and training. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, talks aimed to reinvigorate Iran nuclear deal in Vienna under the chairmanship of European Union EU which decrease the tension.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Iraq is the most influenced by Iran authorities due to neighboring borders and shared Shia connection, so the assassination of Soleimani, who was considered to be the godfather of the foreign military policy for Iran, affects the security and political situation in Iraq.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soleimani had a role not just in Lebanon and Yemen, but also in Syria, as he helped the Syrian government to stay in power where its controlled areas are under Israeli strikes targeting Iranian sites.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Joint Iranian-Iraqi investigation committee&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iran and Iraq set up a joint committee to pursue the assassination of Soleimani and al-Mohandes, Supreme Judicial Council in Iraq; stated in the first meeting of the committee in November 21, a decision had made to take all the possible legal and judicial measures to prosecute and punish all those perpetrators who involved in \u201cthe crime\u201d as they considered. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The council said another decision was made \u201cto continue and enhance bilateral cooperation for completing ongoing judicial investigation; to utilize all available capacities to provide and complete the required information\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December 2021, Tehran hosted the second round of the committee meetings without stating any decisions. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, Saeed Khatibzadeh, the spokesman of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, said in press conference that Tehran has started pursuing the perpetrators of Soleimani assassination hours after the strike.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He pointed out that the joint Iranian-Iraqi committee is to follow the assassination case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that, Kazem Gharib Abadi, the head of the Judiciary for International Affairs ,&nbsp;announced that a special court to try 40 men accused of Soleimani&#8217;s assassination will be held before March 21, the Iranian new year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe assassination case is going to be held in Iraq where the crime took place, another in the international prosecutor\u2019s office in Tehran, and the revolutionary tribunal, in addition to two countries created a joint investigation committee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They announced holding two joint law meetings between Iraq and Iran in Baghdad and Tehran, saying, \u201cafter the third meeting which is going to be held in Baghdad in February, the accused list will be sent to the justice in Tehran\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He&nbsp;further asked the Iraqi Justice Minister to investigate into the fast convening of the first session of that Committee to identify the culprits involved in that criminal act and put them to a fair trial in an Iraqi court.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThree middle east countries and three others are involved in the assassination and there are more than 120 accused, 40 of them are issued.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reported by Hozan
