{"id":68650,"date":"2021-12-03T18:23:42","date_gmt":"2021-12-03T18:23:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=68650"},"modified":"2021-12-03T18:23:48","modified_gmt":"2021-12-03T18:23:48","slug":"germany-tries-syrian-intelligence-officers-charged-with-torture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/68650\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany tries Syrian intelligence officers charged with torture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Germany prosecution called, yesterday, for a life sentence against a former Syrian officer of the intelligence apparatuses of the Syrian government on charges of torture and human rights violations in Syria.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prosecution has accused the main defendant Anwar Reslan, who sought asylum in Germany in 2012, of perpetrating crimes against humanity between 2011 and 2012, German media outlet, DW reported. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 58-year-old Reslan is charged with the murder of 58 detainees and allegedly responsible for the torture of at least 4,000 people at al-Khatib detention center in Damascus, according to DW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The principle of universal jurisdiction allows courts in Germany to try those accused of war crimes in other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">State prosecutor Jasper Klinge said Germany has a historic responsibility to prosecute crimes against humanity. &#8220;We owe this to the victims,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February 2021, the German prosecution convicted the 45-year-old co-defendant Eyad al-Gharib, who was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison, for being guilty of helping to bring 30 anti-government demonstrators to the al-Khatib torture prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both men, who are considered as officers of the Syrian government, were arrested in Germany in 2019 after fleeing Syria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Germany prosecution sentenced men of Syrian government on charges of torture and human rights violations in #Syria. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":68651,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"pgc_sgb_lightbox_settings":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[39,9],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-68650","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-home","category-world"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
