HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>Alya\u2019 al-Hasan, 41, a displaced woman from Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) who lives in a shelter in Hasakah city, northeast Syria, keeps thinking how she will provide for her family and keep them warm in winter amidst shortage of relief aids coming to the center.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al-Hasan, who fled her hometown as a result of a Turkish military operation, shares a classroom in the school that was turned into a shelter with two other displaced relative families.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many displaced families live difficult livelihood conditions amid almost semi-complete lack of relief assistance; medicine, nutrition and heating-related fuel among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

45 shelters out of 81 were left in Hasakah after nearly half the IDPs moved to Sere Kaniye Camp in the eastern part of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medical supplies<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“My life and my neighbors’ in the school is so terrible,” al-Hasan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA medical committee sometimes comes around the shelter to only write prescriptions without affording medicine which high-priced lately,\u201d she added.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faisal Majid, 59, is another displaced person who described to North Press his living conditions in the shelter as saying: “winter is coming and we have no idea how to cope with. My wife and I have no solutions to think of. We have children and all the money we had saved earlier is gone. We cannot afford to buy medicine from drug stores either”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heating-related supplies  <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Salma Muhammad, 47, who lives in a shelter in Hasakah, says the most prominent needs are now beds, winter clothes for children and heating-related supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The beds and sheets we were given have ragged. We hope this situation is taken into consideration because we have no money to afford them,” she complained.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC), Mar Ephrem Association and Blumont organization distribute limited food baskets, hygiene kits and bread to the shelters, whereas the Autonomous Administration’s aid is focused only on the camps, the IDPs in the shelter claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tel Kochar (al-Ya\u2019roubiyah) crossing, east Syria, has been closed to UN humanitarian access to northeast Syria since 2020 due to a veto used by Russia and China, which exacerbated the challenges facing the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hasakah-based Washokani camp, founded by the Autonomous Administration in October 2019, shelters 15,158 IDPs, including 2,317 families distributed on 1,986 tents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hasakah-based Sere Kaniye Camp, founded by the Autonomous Administration in 2020, shelters 11,642 IDPs, including 2,200 families distributed on 2,640 tents. All of the IDPs here came from other shelter centers in Hasakah and its countryside, the camps administration stated.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There is deficiency in the mechanism of distributing aid to the IDPs especially by the advent of winter. The closure of cross-border points have affected negatively the IDPs who are likely to suffer humanitarian and medical crisis,” Sheikhmous Ahmad<\/a>, co-chair of the Office of Refugees and Displaced Affairs of the Autonomous Administration of North and Ease Syria (AANES), said earlier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lack of job opportunities  <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another displaced person identified as Salem al-Jasem, 32, said the aid they receive are limited and do not fill their needs for few days. He added they are obliged to sell some supplies so they can get vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The lack of job opportunities in Hasakah leads us to borrow money. I have borrowed a million and 700,000 SYP so far to buy the basic needs for my family,” al-Jasem said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jiwan Iso, a lawyer and a member of the Sere Kaniye Council for displaced people said they asked the pro-Autonomous Administration Organizations Office to offer assistance to the IDPs in the camps as well as in the shelter centers in Hasakah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The council has ask the Qamishli-based UNHCR to be allowed to follow the affairs of the two camps of Washokani and Sere Kaniye in addition to the shelter centers,” he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Council is trying to communicate all international parties to the conflict to reach a safe repatriation of the IDPs,” he added.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sere Kaniye Council for displaced people works to alleviate the suffering of the IDPs in all regions and to document the violations Turkey is committing in Sere Kaniye. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
