{"id":66947,"date":"2021-10-30T07:36:44","date_gmt":"2021-10-30T07:36:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=66947"},"modified":"2021-10-30T07:53:21","modified_gmt":"2021-10-30T07:53:21","slug":"turkey-deports-syrian-refuges-over-provocative-banana-eating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/66947\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey deports Syrian refugees over \u2018provocative\u2019 banana-eating"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>Syrian refugees face the threat of deportation after Turkishauthorities arrested 11 on charges of &#8220;provocatively&#8221; eating bananas in social media posts. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Istanbul Police Department took action against 31 suspects in total in the banana case, arresting 11, according to Turkish media.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The banana case started when a video was posted on social media in which a Turkish man in Istanbul complaining he \u201ccould not afford to buy bananas\u201d, while Syrians could afford &#8220;kilograms of bananas&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This video footage caused a great controversy among Syrians residing in Turkey, as pioneers of social media shared various types of satirical images, all related to their eating of bananas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Turks saw that these videos &#8220;mock the economic hardship of Turkish citizens&#8221; in the face of inflation and the devaluation of the national currency. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a week, the matter escalated, and on October 28, the Turkish authorities arrested 7 Syrian refugees who shared videos about the bananas, on charges of &#8220;inciting people to hatred and humiliation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the Turkish Immigration Service said it will deport them after completing the necessary legal procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From time to time, the Turkish authorities launch campaigns related to the arrest of Syrians, and then to organize the necessary files against them to deport them to Syria.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Turkish authorities continue to deport Syrian refugees under several pretexts and excuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a statement published by the Bab al-Hawa border crossing management, northwest Syria, the number of Syrian refugees who were deported from Turkey to northern Syria in January 2021, reached 2,229.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Turkish authorities also invoke the deportation of Syrians, \u201cunder the pretext of fabricating some problems that do not rise to the level of making a decision to deport to areas that may not be safe for Syrians, even if they are in Idlib and its countryside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 4 million Syrians live in Turkey, according to Turkish official statistics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 Syrian refugees face the threat of deportation after Turkishauthorities arrested 11 on charges of &#8220;provocatively&#8221; eating bananas in social media posts. &nbsp; The Istanbul Police Department took action against 31 suspects in total in the banana case, arresting 11, according to Turkish media.&nbsp; The banana case started when a video [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":66948,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"pgc_sgb_lightbox_settings":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[5,39,2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-66947","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-community","category-home","category-syria"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
