IDLIB, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>On the balcony of his house opposite to Syrian-Turkish border, north of Idlib, northwestern Syria, the 15-year-old Naser al-Ahmad sits on a wheelchair after he was sniped by Turkish border guards while he was trying to illegally smuggle a group of people into Turkish territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result of knowing the nature and terrain of the region as well as the smuggling paths on the border area, dozens of minors of areas near the border, north of Idlib, work as guiders for people, who want to cross the Syrian-Turkish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senior smugglers send a minor as a “guider” with each group in order to pass into Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, those minors and the people, who want to cross the border, are often exposed to the risk of being shot by Turkish gendarmeries, as they are hit and tortured in the event that they are caught, according to several minors that North Press met with.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Need for money<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite the seriousness of this work, which caused the killing and wounding of several minors, many are still working in this field due to their deteriorating livelihood and economic conditions.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the eruption of the Syrian war to June 2021, the number of those killed by Turkish gendarmeries’ bullets reached 476 civilians including 86 minors, according to Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For three years, al-Ahmad, who hails from Harem, north of Idlib, has been forced to give up his study, saying, “Due to my family’s urgent need for money, I was forced to stop going to school.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“At the time, one of the senior smugglers from my village told me that he wants a minor guider to smuggle people to Turkey in turn for $25 each time I manage to smuggle a group,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since he knows all adequate paths for smuggling because he is from a village, which is only few meters far from the Turkish border, he found the offer “too good” so that he started working as a guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two years ago, work was good and it was easy to enter to Turkish territory, but it is becoming more difficult each time due to the great scrutiny of the Turkish border guards, who are now shooting directly, according to minors North Press meet with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al-Ahmad himself was an eyewitness on the killing and wounding of many people including children and women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once, when he was guiding a group of 34 people, the Turkish border guards opened fire on the group, wounding five people including al-Ahmad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“A bullet lodged in the spine that changed my entire life and I became disable,” he indicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 15 minors are working for the 37-year-old Rami al-Ghazal (pseudonym), a senior smuggler, for different wages, which range between $15 and $75, according to the nature of each area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al-Ghazal believes that having minors working in this dangerous and hard professional is not an “exploitation” as residents accuse him of, justifying that saying, “Because I pay those minors high wages in turn for their work.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Missing minors<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In late August, a civilian was killed and others were wounded as a result of being shot by the Turkish gendarmeries while they were trying to cross the Syrian-Turkish border, north of Idlib.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early in 2019, the son of Umm Jamil, a woman from a village in Harem region, north of Idlib, went missing while he was smuggling people to Turkey through smuggling routes near border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mother, whose son was about 16 years old at the time, said that she tried to ask about her son, but all attempts have been in vain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“After my husband died years ago, my son was forced to work with smugglers in order to secure his siblings’ basic needs; However, we did not know that he will go missing,” Umm Jamil added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mother pointed out that her son often returned exhausted, especially those times when border guards managed to catch him “They hit him violently with no mercy. I wish he returns today and I do not want anything else in this life.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For two years, the 14-year-old Omar al-Qasir has been smuggling people including women and children so that the senior smugglers relies on him to smuggle a group of more than 50 people, who walk behind him until they reach a Turkish area.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al-Qasir is forced to work in this field in order to secure expenses of treatment for his father, who suffers from cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He makes between $25 and $75 each time he manages to smuggle a group to Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During this time, he faced many risks especially while returning at night alone from Turkish territory to Syria before he managed to smuggle the entire group that accompanied him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
