ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> All attempts by Abdulhamid Jum’a, 22, member of the Fifth Corps, to leave, have failed, while he does not mind returning to the ranks of the government forces in which he was previously, but his request was rejected by his commanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the beginning of 2017, the government forces established the Fifth Corps, and 11 centers were opened to attract members who were not assigned to compulsory military service, or those fleeing it.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joining the Russian-backed Fifth Corps was initially done under an official contract for a full year and a salary of $200 per month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jum’a described the decision to transfer him from his military point in al-Kiswah region in the Rif Dimashq to one of the Idlib fronts during the storming of the city of Khan Shaykhoun, as arbitrary and it took place without his will.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that he was forced to sign the contract without allowing him to read its terms. The officer in charge only said: “You will get $200.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jum’a pointed out that the process of incursions against the opposition militants “were carried out on the principle that either to storm or to die, and with no air coverage.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Temptations to join  <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Masoud al-Hakim, 55, a resident of the eastern neighborhoods in the city of Aleppo, who joined the Fifth Corps in 2019, said that the financial temptations were what attracted him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I expected the joining to be appropriate for me and suitable for my age and physical health, but the opposite happened,” he told North Press.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that he was transferred to one of the military fronts in the Syrian desert in Palmyra to fight the militants of the Islamic State (ISIS), despite his old age, “I submitted my resignation, but it was rejected.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, he spends half of his monthly salary “as transportation fare and gifts to the officer in return for giving him leave to see his family.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to private sources, the Fifth Corps contains four brigades, each comprising three battalions with a total of 300 members, in addition to 15,000 fighters of the armed forces of the Baath Brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, hundreds of fighters from the armed Syrian opposition factions, who made governmental settlements under Russian guarantees, joined the Corps, most of them were from Suwayda and Daraa governorates, south Syria, according to officers and members. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Financial corruption  <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Amir Sha’ar, 35, a resident of Aleppo, was summoned for the reserve military service to join the Fifth Corps as an administrative employee in early 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After he joined, he was surprised that he was handed military equipment with a machine gun and sent to one of the frontlines in the countryside of Hama.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Russian Admiral Vyacheslav Sitkin is supervising the Fifth Corps with the aid of a number of other officers of Syrian nationality, according to Sha’ar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his part, Ali Muhanna, 50, a pseudonym for an officer working in the Corps’ First Brigade stationed on the Palmyra-Deir ez-Zor road, said that their mission is to control the “soldiers” as Syrians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muhanna agreed to the decision of transferring him to the Fifth Corps in April 2018, hoping for a better life for his family, as he would receive a doubled monthly salary than his previous one.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he said: “We are treated by the Russian officials as mercenaries. We are obligated to carry out their orders literally, and if it were not for the bitter economic conditions, I would not have accepted that.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

North Press tried to contact a Facebook account of the Central Channel of the Russian Army in Syria regarding these accusations, but it did not receive any response.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fifth Corps is considered one of Russia\u2019s arms in Syria, through which it storms the areas it wants to control, and its commanders are protected from legal accountability for not being under the command of the Syrian government forces, according to the officer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
