{"id":64648,"date":"2021-09-11T19:51:22","date_gmt":"2021-09-11T19:51:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=64648"},"modified":"2021-09-11T19:51:23","modified_gmt":"2021-09-11T19:51:23","slug":"discussions-with-damascus-were-substantial-un-official","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/64648\/","title":{"rendered":"Discussions with Damascus were substantial: UN official"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> On Saturday, the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, said that he held &#8220;substantial discussions&#8221; with the Syrian authorities in Damascus, expressing his hope for the Constitutional Committee meetings to be resumed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking to reporters following his meeting with the Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Faisal Mekdad, Pedersen said his discussion with the Syrian side touched upon the economic challenges and the situation on the ground in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He expressed hope regarding the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/50423\/\">Constitutional Committee<\/a> consists of 150 members, including 50 representatives of the opposition, the government and civil society, where its mission is to reformulate the Syrian constitution, under UN supervision. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The committee\u2019s work began in November 2019, with meetings in Geneva, Switzerland, to be halted in the same month, amid mutual accusations between the government and the opposition to obstruct the committee\u2019s work. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On September 18, 2020, Pedersen announced that efforts to set the committee\u2019s agenda had faltered, without naming the causer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UN Special Envoy for #Syria visited #Damascus and discussed the economic challenges and the situation on the ground. @UN <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":64649,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"pgc_sgb_lightbox_settings":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[39,3,2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-64648","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-home","category-politics","category-syria"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
