{"id":64269,"date":"2021-08-31T13:37:54","date_gmt":"2021-08-31T13:37:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=64269"},"modified":"2021-08-31T13:37:55","modified_gmt":"2021-08-31T13:37:55","slug":"ngo-suspends-activities-in-syrias-hawl-camp-after-armed-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/64269\/","title":{"rendered":"NGO suspends activities in Syria\u2019s Hawl Camp after armed attack"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) &#8211;<\/strong> A source from the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) said on Tuesday that the council has suspended its activities until next Saturday, with the possibility of terminatining them permanently in one of the sectors of the Hawl Camp, south of Hasakah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sunday, the NRC organization temporarily suspended its activities in one of the sectors in Hawl Camp, east of Hasakah, northeastern Syria, after the center was threatened by an armed terrorist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The organization\u2019s decision came after a masked gunman in Hawl Camp threatened its employees on Thursday to target them if they did not pay money under the name of <em>jizya <\/em>(a tax paid by non-Muslims), which forced the organization\u2019s workers to leave their posts in the camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The masked man, who was carrying a pistol, demanded that an official at an educational center affiliated with NRC to pay $300 for each employee in the camp, and $500 for its employees working outside the camp as<em> jizya.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This incident is the first of its kind in the camp, which includes families of ISIS militants in three of its 11 sectors, and it has recently witnessed an increase in killings and attacks on Syrian, Iraqi, and foreign residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the first quarter of 2021, Hawl Camp recorded more than 40 killings, in addition to about 30 other killings since mid-April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sectors within the camp lack security points, as the presence of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) is limited to the camp\u2019s surroundings and its center located near the main gate in the first sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The source told North Press, on condition of anonymity, that NRC suspended its activities until next Saturday with the possibility of closing the center permanently after the incident that took place in an educational center in the fifth sector, while continuing activities in its educational centers in the first and fourth sectors of the camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NRC provides many services in the camp, as it has a special office for legal advice, in addition to providing water distribution to camp residents as well as educational services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting by Jindar Abdulqader<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Norwegian Refugee Council will suspend its activities in one of the sectors of #Syria&#8217;s #Hawl Camp after an armed gunman threatened one of their centers. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":64271,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"pgc_sgb_lightbox_settings":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[7,2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-64269","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-military-developments","category-syria"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
