IDLIB, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>Despite being criticized by her society, 21-year-old Ola as-Saloum (a pseudonym), an IDP in the village of Ein Shib in the countryside of Idlib, northwest Syria, did not hesitate to learn and work in the repair and maintenance of cell phones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a course of two months, the girl received theoretical and practical training, enabling her to enter the labor market in hardware and software specialization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right now, as-Saloum is working with 30 other females in a center for cellphone maintenance for women in the city of Idlib.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ending male monopoly<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Women in Idlib city, which is run by Turkish-backed armed factions and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front), are trying to find jobs enable them to support their families in light of deteriorating living conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result of the prevailing norms and traditions preventing women from entering the workforce, women are not allowed to be engaged in professions which are monopolized only by men.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although 30-year-old Ahmed al-Kanj, a resident of the city of Sarmada, does not have any explanation as to why, he believes that \u201ccellphone maintenance is not a suitable job for women.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis kind of work requires precision in addition to the experience and competence that are not found in everyone,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Ola and other women seek to break the male domination and gain new experiences, as well as help to secure the expenses of their university studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll women operating in the center obtained training certificates and have the will to deal with electronics, with most of them knowing English well,\u201d Ola said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safe services for women<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Unlike other fathers, 41-year-old Idlib resident Omar al-Fayloni encouraged his daughter to learn this profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being professional in dealing with cellphones in terms of programing and maintenance has become a necessity for women in order to \u201cprotect themselves,\u201d according to al-Fayloni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Customers of female-owned shops agree that a male having his cellphone repaired is much less likely to be subjected to cyber stalking, extortion, blackmail, surveillance, or other unethical behaviors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women in Idlib welcome the idea of having females working in cellphone maintenance, because this will contribute to preserving the privacy of their phones, and protect them from blackmail and violations of their privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

25-year-old Idlib resident Jomanah Qorba says that her work in such a profession allows her to protect the privacy of women\u2019s cellphones against violations of \u201cweak-minded men.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order not to be victims of privacy violations, many women are forced to delete all photos and videos from their cellphones before sending them to the maintenance centers run by men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

27-year-old Idlib resident Salam Johar (a pseudonym) says that she was forced to pay money to a repairman who threatened to release her photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added that her marriage nearly ended in divorce as a result of subsequent disputes with her husband over the blackmail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johar, who sent her cellphone to a maintenance center run by men in the past, believes that having female workers in this profession is important and necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
