HAMA, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>Talal al-Namo (a pseudonym), a landowner in the village of al-Mashrafah in the countryside of Hama, in central Syria, bemoans his trees which were damaged in the fires of last week, describing the matter as “a nightmare which is repeated every summer.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al-Namo extinguished the fires before the firetrucks\u2019 arrival, which was late to control the fires as they burnt hundreds of hectares of oak, pine, olive, and apple trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents of the countryside of Hama accuse gunmen and leaders of factions affiliated with the government of arson over the recent years in order to make profits by selling the coal of the burnt trees, while government officials accuse unidentified parties of arson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, fires ravaged wide areas of forests and agricultural lands in the countryside of Hama, Homs, and Latakia. They extended from northern Syria on the Turkish border towards the Lebanese territories to the south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fires started early this summer, according to citizens who said that the government protection procedures are still absent in some areas accusing figures and military leaders affiliated with the government of exploiting the fires for personal interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coal and firewood trade<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Makram al-Saloum (a pseudonym), a resident of Masyaf, said that members of the government forces and the National Defense Forces (NDF) are deployed in these forests to collect firewood and sell it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe forces threaten those who tour the forests, including employees tasked with forest protection, to hide piles of firewood and coal near their tents amid the trees,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Hama\u2019s countryside, the fires usually break out in Masyaf, Mahardah, Wadi al-Uyun, Abu Qubays, al-Mahrusah, al-Saboura, and other areas characterized by mountainous and forested nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al-Saloum links the presence of gunmen in the woods several years ago to the spread of fires, saying that the heat of summer is not recent in the area but the fires emerged only a few years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eyewitnesses in the countryside of Hama reported that members of the government forces built houses and rest houses in the areas burnt by the fires of last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of fruit trees affected by last year’s fires reached 2,100,000, according to the Syrian Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Late firefighting teams<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In April, the head of the Syrian government’s Fire and Forest Monitoring Platform Rosa Qarmouqa told pro-government media outlets that the Remote Survey Authority has prepared a platform for predicting or early warning of the danger of forest fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, the Directorate of Agriculture in Hama city announced through the pro-government al-Fidaa <\/em>newspaper the appointment of 350 firefighters and the allocation of 13 fire trucks and tanks in addition to posts to deal with expected fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The firefighting teams were distributed to cover the areas of Kafr Aqeed, al- Mahrusah, Masyaf, Ba\u2019reen, Nissaf, Rabu, Ayn Halaqim, Wadi al-Uyun, al-Saboura, Hama, Hamra, Hirbnafsah and Kafr Zita, according to the newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the fires returned this month to devour hundreds of hectares of forests in the cities of Latakia, Tartous, Homs, and Hama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government apparatus attributes the delay in controlling the fires to high temperatures, wind, and the rugged forests which help the fire spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nafi\u2019 al-Omar (a pseudonym), a resident of the western countryside of Hama, told North Press that officers in the ranks of the government forces are paying bribes to be moved to the area of fires to benefit from selling firewood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al-Omar added that firefighting teams arrive only after a wide area is destroyed, referring to agreements between the government officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe fires of al-Laqbah forest in the countryside of Masyaf continued for a week when hundreds of hectares burned and were no longer suitable for agriculture,\u201d he pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accusations by the government<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Government officials do not reject talk about arson, especially as more than 150 fires broke out in the countryside of Latakia, Homs, and Tartous in two days only of October 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fires led to the death of five citizens and the injury of 100, according to pro-government media outlets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The police chief of Tartous city told the pro-government al-Watan <\/em>newspaper that the police arrested 15 people suspected of arson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, residents in the countryside of Hama said that some of the detainees were soldiers and were released. In late 2020, Syria TV<\/em> published confessions, said to be of those involved in arson, \u201cfor financial benefit and external funding\u201d without naming the beneficiaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several days ago, the Head of the Forest Protection Center in Masyaf Madian al-Ali told the Syrian government official news agency SANA<\/em> \u201cthe al-Laqbah forest fire is the fifth that firefighting teams have been able to put out in that area, which raises doubts about setting up those huge fires that caused the loss of hundreds of hectares of fruitful trees and forest perennials.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite doubts and accusations, al-Namo considers the procedures taken by the government to be fictitious, as they have not stopped any one of the arsonists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
