youth migration continues, no solutions in sight

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The 23-year-old Fadi Makhoul, a student at the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Damascus, believes that staying in the country after graduation has become a nightmare that haunts every Syrian youth at home, and that there is no solution for young people, especially males, but to think about emigration.

After more than a decade of the war in Syria, and despite the relative calm on some fronts compared to previous years, Syrian youth are still migrating abroad in search of a future that guarantees their lives.

Compulsory military service, security pursuits and living conditions are the main reasons for migration, which specialists warn of its effects on the country and its residents.

Conscription

“Thinking about immigration is one of the steps that has become essential for every university student,” said Makhoul who resides in al-Qasaa’ neighborhood in Damascus.

“I cannot stay in the country after my graduation, because of the military service, you do not know how many years you will service in the military, there is no specific year of demobilization after the outbreak of the war,” he told North Press.

Makhoul stated that the government’s failure to introduce any laws regarding conscription will cause major social crises as a result of emptying the country of males.

The Syrian government imposes on 18-year-old males a mandatory military service, which it calls the flag service, which usually lasts for one and a half years.

However, since the beginning of the conflict in Syria, the authorities have tended to activate the reserve service, under which soldiers are kept for an unknown period.

Many social studies and official government figures confirm the significant increase in the percentage of females compared to males in Syria, as these percentages continuing to increase.

Makhoul pointed out that his situation is better than others, “I am from a relatively well-off family, and I can cover my travel and studies costs abroad, but the majority of young people are unable to secure travel costs even by illegal and dangerous ways.”

“The young men, especially university students, are the most concerned and striving for migration, given the many obstacles facing their future projects.

According to a study conducted by Aman Network which includes activists and organizations working to build local and national peace in Syria, the exacerbation of living, political and social crises, in addition to the security situation, has led to a high rate of migration among young people.

Young people make up about 50% of Syrian refugees in European and neighboring countries, according to unofficial statistics.

Security Pursuits

The emigration of Syrian youth is one of the most prominent phenomena of the Syrian war throughout Syria for several different reasons that prompted them to leave the country, despite the great difficulties they face on the way of asylum.

After three years of detention during which the 39-year-old Amer Sa’id (pseudonym), a resident of Damascus, spent in the prisons of the Syrian government, he managed to immigrate to Lebanon, escaping what he called “The tyranny of fate” in his country, which intensified after the outbreak of protests in 2011.

Sa’id is in constant feeling of fear for his relatives in Syria that they will be harassed by the security forces, especially after spending three years in prison.

He was arrested due to his participation in a social and humanitarian activity concerned with the issues of IDPs, which aimed to help the displaced from the areas of clashes.

“My participation annoyed the Syrian government, because I bypassed its security approvals, and it began to pursue and harass me,” he said.

Sa’id does not agree with the countries that claim the end of immigration conditions in his country and the return of safe living conditions to it.

In April, the UNHCR criticized Denmark’s policy towards Syrian refugees, against the background of denying Syrian refugees residence permits, considering that the situation in their city of Damascus is safe.

“UNHCR does not consider the recent security improvements in some parts of Syria to be sufficiently substantive, stable or permanent, to justify the termination of international protection for any group of refugees,” UNHCR said in a statement issued in New York.

Harsh effects

Although most Syrian families suffer from diaspora caused by the separation of family members, the pressures of living still push the children to migrate in search of a glimmer of hope for themselves and their families.

Mazen Muhammed a pseudonym for a government employee in Damascus and lives in the town of Sahnaya, said that the need and difficult living condition forced his only son to emigrate to secure his livelihood.

Muhammed, a father of three, said “The high prices which we can no longer bear, forced my son to immigrate with a group of young people in search of job opportunities outside his country.”

“My son was suffering because of the harsh living situation and the failure to secure a job that respects his university degree and his humanity,” the father added.

Many social studies confirm that the accumulated and future crises lead to the exacerbation of this phenomenon and profoundly affect the social structure.

Shahad Ali a pseudonym for a female researcher in sociology, said that the negative social effects of youth migration affect even females residing in the country, the elderly, children, scientific expertise and competencies.

“The percentage of elderly workers has increased due to the decline in the number of young men and the poor living conditions, and that the process of resigning from jobs has become difficult due to the decrease in the percentage of young people working in government institutions,” Ali told North Press.

Alos, the continuous extension of work for the few experienced people left in the country, and the call to raise the retirement age for university professors to 65 years old, according to the researcher.

She pointed out that this phenomenon is reflected in the decline in production of the institutions and their weak effectiveness, especially with the lack of incentives to continue working.

At the same time, young people’s retreat from marriage remains one of the worst consequences that could be reflected in the long-term, in turning society into an old society unable to do anything, according to social workers in the capital, Damascus.

<h3
