DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) –<\/strong> Samer al-Khalil, a civil engineer working in his private office in Damascus, received his coronavirus vaccine at Qatana Government Hospital in Rif-Dimashq, just ten days after registering on the Ministry of Health platform, and had no fears of its side effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The civil engineer stated that vaccination is easier than infection with coronavirus, but he criticized the lack of preventative measures in the place designated for taking the vaccine, as there are restrictions on the part of the vaccination crews to wear special clothes besides masks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 5, the Syrian Ministry of Health launched an online platform to register for the coronavirus vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May, an official in the Ministry of Health told North Press that the vaccination of health workers against coronavirus had begun for those who wanted it, with the Russian Sputnik<\/em> vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 25, the vaccination process for health staff was limited to workers in quarantine departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 22, the Ministry of Health announced, through official outlets, that it had received the first batch of 200,003 vaccines against coronavirus from the WHO-initiated COVAX program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry dedicated 71 hospitals, 96 infirmaries, and 416 mobile teams to deliver vaccines to applicants in government-controlled areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The source at the Ministry of Health stated that the process of vaccination is continuing, and is taking place according to the registration process on the platform, and the number of those who received the vaccine reached more than 100,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Syria is still receiving quantities of vaccines from friendly countries and through the COVAX initiative, according to the source, without specifying the quantity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No immunity yet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On June 3, Syrian ambassador to Moscow Riad Haddad said that Russia had sent a shipment of Sputnik<\/em> vaccines to Syria to vaccinate the general population, after the medical staff and senior officials had received the vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The source of the Ministry of Health said that Syria is still far from reaching level of herd immunity and needs to vaccinate about 70% of the population, the vaccination process is important to get out of the repercussions of COVID-19 on several levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He denied the existence of any fears of receiving the vaccine, whether it was Sputnik<\/em>, the Chinese vaccine, or the Indian AstraZeneca<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rami Hamdan, an administrative employee in a health institution in Damascus, refused to receive the vaccine and justified this by his lack of confidence in the Chinese and Russian vaccines that arrive in Syria in batches, which are stored in an unsafe way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that vaccination centers, such as Ibn al-Nafis Center, witnessed overcrowding and the absence of preventative measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 13, the head of the mission and representative of the World Health Organization in Syria, Akjemal Magtymova, told Russian media, “There are currently no clear details about when the second shipment of AstraZeneca vaccines will arrive in Syria.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She stated that “it depends on many factors, including the availability of the vaccine in the global market and manufacturing capacity.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Low infection toll<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

About a week ago, institutions in the Damascus government began to reactivate the fingerprint system for employees, as well as hospitals which restarted receiving non-coronavirus patients in their various departments amid indications of a decrease in the daily rate of coronavirus infected cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday, the media office of the Ministry of Health of the Syrian government recorded 42 new coronavirus infections, nine recoveries, and five deaths in its areas of control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The total toll of the infections in the government-held areas has come up to 24,946, including 1,825 deaths and 21,699 recoveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last Sunday, local news agencies and pages on social media circulated rumors about the causes of the death of journalist Ammar al-Shibli, who died in Raqqa after receiving an AstraZeneca vaccine, and linked the death to receiving the vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The AstraZeneca vaccine should not be given to those under the age of 50, because it sometimes causes life-threatening blood clots, member of the government coronavirus advisory team said based on the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) had told North Press earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Ministry of Health decided to give the Russian and Chinese vaccines to doctors and those under the age of 50, and give AstraZeneca vaccine to those over 50, especially patients with chronic diseases to avoid any surprises,\u201d he added at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Director of Primary Health Care Razan Tarabishi, who is also in charge of the national program for vaccination against coronavirus, added in statements to the pro-government Tishreen newspaper in May, \u201cany possible side effects of the vaccines are much less dangerous than catching coronavirus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
