ERBIL, Iraq (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>On Saturday, the regions of north Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) witnessed events of immediate concern after an attack that targeted a convoy of Peshmerga in northern Duhok, and a Turkish attack that targeted Makhmur refugee camp and what the both attacks left of positions on the Kurdish and Iraqi stage in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five Peshmerga were killed and four were wounded in an attack on a military vehicle in the Metin area of Amadiya District in Duhok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accusations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Accusations were exchanged about the nature of the targeting, as the Ministry of Peshmerga sayd that Peshmerga fighters were killed and wounded in an ambush by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Metin mountain in Dohuk governorate, but the PKK denied this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The People\u2019s Defence Forces (HPG), the armed wing of the PKK, said in a statement, “Its forces fired some warning bullets to prevent the advance of a convoy of forces affiliated with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) to their area.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“An unknown explosion targeted the convoy of forces and resulted in casualties in one or two vehicles,” the statement added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The HPG considered the casualties as “unfortunate and sad”, and the statement stressed that the KDP forces were not targeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kurdistan Region Parliament expressed its rejection of choices of war in a statement published on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It called on \u201ceveryone to respect the borders of Kurdistan and to refrain from endangering its security and stability.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both the KRG and Iraqi government presidencies condemned the attack in two separate statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the Iraqi side, it did not directly accuse any party, as the spokesperson for the Iraqi Commander-in-Chief, Major General Yehia Rasool condemned the “cowardly terrorist attack,” saying security forces are now investigating the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Every aggressor against the blood and security of Iraqis will receive a fair punishment,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Iraqi armed forces reiterate their assertion on imposing the sovereignty over the entire Iraq, stressing the constitutional principle by not to allow Iraq to be a launching pad for any attack on its neighbors,” he referred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Violations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In conjunction with this incident, a Turkish drone targeted a children’s park in Makhmur Refugee Camp on Saturday at noon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Makhmur Camp is located in Iraqi territory, on the administrative border of the governorates of Nineveh and Erbil. It hosts Kurds who fled Turkey in 1990s after a Turkish campaign of violence and burning of villages in the Kurdish-majority south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The camp administration has not provided any information regarding any deaths, while media outlets reported some causalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington consideres the Turkish targeting of residents in Makhmur         Camp in Iraq, a “violation of international and humanitarian law.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I made clear to Turkish officials that any attack targeting civilians at Makhmur refugee camp would be a violation of international and humanitarian law,” United States ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield tweeted earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I\u2019m deeply concerned about violence near the camp today and call on all sides to respect the rights of refugees,” she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turkey continues its military operations in the KRG despite local and international condemnations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan revealed his intentions to target Makhmur Camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turkish forces launch ground and air attacks on the northern border areas in the KRG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents of the Makhmur Camp demonstrated yesterday, condemning the Turkish attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sulaymaniyah governorate witnessed a similar demonstration, calling for the expulsion of Turkish forces from the territory of the KRG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catastrophe<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Makhmur was targeted by Turkish airstrikes a year ago. The targeting also attacked Sinjar, northern Iraq, where local residents reported that Sardasht Hospital in Sinjar was exposed to aerial bombardment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the beginning of this month, a group of activists and NGOs in Erbil called on the leaders of the governments of the KRG and Iraq to put an end to the Turkish attacks on the KRG region, in a press conference held on June 2nd<\/sup> in Erbil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement described the Turkish intervention \u201cwith a depth of 40 kilometers\u201d in the territory of the KRG as a \u201cmajor catastrophe\u201d that harms people and things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bahra Muhammad Amin, a civil activist, told North Press that they are waiting for urgent action by the leaders of the KRG and Baghdad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April, a number of residents of Amadiya district in Dohuk governorate expressed their dissatisfaction with the repeated Turkish bombing of their villages, and many of them turned into empty places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 19, Turkish warplanes launched six air raids on villages in the vicinity of the Gare and Metin mountains in the Dohuk Governorate in the KRG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that time, local media quoted sources in the Amadiya district as saying that four Turkish warplanes violated Iraqi airspace and flew over the area from 1:00 to 2:30 after midnight, on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warplanes bombed the villages of Korko and Banafi, which are located on the slopes of Matin Mountain in the district, as well as the village of Kafia and other sites at the foot of Gare Mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
