HAMA, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Maram al-Ghafir, a student at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities in Hama, central Syria, decided to miss her faculty until the end of what she called “a farce,” referring to the rallies supporting the candidacy of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for the new election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 20, the university administration suspended all lectures and forced the students to march out in pro-Assad rallies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The administration closed the gate of the university for three frequent hours and prevented students from leaving, while some tried to escape through jumping on the wall, according to al-Ghafir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 29, Luna Al-Shibl, Syrian President Media Consultant, announced the launch of the election campaign for the current president on May 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Threatening <\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Employees and students in the city of Hama complain of being forced to march in support of Assad, under penalty of accountability for those who refuse to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Members of the faculty distributed posters of the current president and the Syrian flags to students to participate in the march in al-Assi Square,” Tariq Hassan, a student at the Faculty of Veterinary, told North Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He likened the university to a security branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The faculty\u2019s professors set practical examinations for students within the election week with the aim of compelling them to attend and ensuring their participation in the elections and rallies, according to Hassan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haytham Khawam, a mathematics teacher at a preparatory school in Tareeq Halab neighborhood, told North Press: “The school principal forced us to attend until the elections ended.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We were also forced to distribute school certificates to students on the election day, to attract the people and push them to vote,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teachers were threatened by the school administration to submit their names to the Baath Party branch for accountability if they do not abide by working hours and participate in pro-Assad rallies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teachers leave the school on a daily basis to gather in al-Assi Square to participate in the rallies, and inspections are conducted every hour to ensure that they stay and not escape from the electoral tent, according to Khawam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mobilization <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hoda Rayyes, an employee from the city of Hama, said that she applied to her administration for getting a sick leave due to her health condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the manager refused to give her the leave saying: “Hourly, daily and sick leave are forbidden of any kind during the election week.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The matter went beyond the ban until it became a threat by the security branches to force the employees to participate in the rallies,” she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She pointed out that one of the employees collected funds from all the employees in the directorate under threat and on orders from the higher authorities in order to put posters of Bashar al-Assad as a presentation by the directorate\u2019s employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She described the issue as open theft, although the salary is not enough to meet their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They want us to elect al-Assad by force and coerced,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muhannad al-Mulqi, an employee at the municipality in Hama, told North Press that all cars in the directorate were designated to hang posters and flags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“All the employees working within the municipality have been mobilized, working overtime after work, and forcing us to stay from morning to evening without any additional wages,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pointed out that the director told them, “This week is a week of mobilization for all workers in the country to show our love and support for al-Assad and prevent us from taking daily and hourly leave.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are forced to participate, and we cannot disobey the new instructions because the regime has placed informants and agents among the employees in order to report our move and our conversations to Shabiha and the security branches.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
