{"id":59406,"date":"2021-05-17T16:51:13","date_gmt":"2021-05-17T16:51:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=59406"},"modified":"2021-05-17T16:51:14","modified_gmt":"2021-05-17T16:51:14","slug":"methamphetamine-use-spreads-in-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/59406\/","title":{"rendered":"Methamphetamine use spreads in Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PALMYRA, Syria (North Press)<\/strong> &#8211; About two months after she lost all the money she had saved and her health deteriorated due to methamphetamine use, 22-year-old Yasmin&nbsp; al-Ahmed (a pseudonym), from the city of Palmyra in the middle of the Syrian desert, entered into a psychological battle to finally end her addiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yasmin&#8217;s struggle with addiction began after one of her friends managed to convince her to take her first dose for free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yasmin said in an exclusive interview to North Press that she was forced to pay 50,000 SYP to secure the drugl, \u201cuntil I had sold all my gold jewelry.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Methamphetamine has become popular in Homs in general and Palmyra in the eastern countryside in particular, and the demand for it is increasing dramatically, according to local drug dealers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to promoters and users, the street name &#8220;<em>cocaine of the poor&#8221;<\/em> came from its low price compared to other substances, as one Iranian gram is sold for 100,000 SYP, while the same amount of the Lebanese type is sold for 60,000 SYP in Palmyra and Homs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dealers attributed the reason for the low price of the Lebanese type of the drug in the capital Damascus, due to the short distance between Lebanon and Syria, where one gram of it is sold for 35,000 SYP in Damascus, while the Iranian is sold for 125,000 SYP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lebanese type of drug is considered to be of lesser quality, because Lebanese manufacturers do not have experience with the secrets of cooking the substance, according to dealers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Methamphetamine manufactured in Iran reaches Syrian territory via the Iraqi borders, which are held by groups supported by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and the forces of the Damascus government in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Winning new customers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ismail Muhammad (a pseudonym), a low-level drug dealer in Palmyra, said that methamphetamine in particular and narcotic substances in general \u201carrive at my house after ordering from dealers in the city of Deir ez-Zor, and the price is paid in full after the distribution process; I obtain 25% profit.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The materials arrive quickly due to facilitation by factions loyal to Iran, and in some cases the road is opened by paying officers from the government forces in exchange for a 24-hour military mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other reason for the decrease in its price is due to the entry of Lebanese dealers and the start of the manufacture of lower-quality substance after the rise of popularity in Syria and neighboring countries, where a Lebanese gram was sold for 20,000 SYP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Criminal judgment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Criminal punishment differs between drug dealers, drug users, and higher-level dealers, as a user is sentenced from three to 15 years, according to what is stipulated in Article 43 of the Syrian Drug Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for the possession of drugs without the purpose of trafficking or abuse, the article stipulates imprisonment for a period of one year maximum and a fine not exceeding 5,000 SYP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The penalty for drug trafficking is more severe than the punishment for drug use in Syria: life imprisonment and a fine is between one million and five million SYP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes a drug trafficker, manufacturer, or grower with intent to trade may even receive a death sentence<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The punishment may also be reduced in specific cases specified by law, and mitigating circumstances may be made use of in certain cases related to reporting.
