{"id":59218,"date":"2021-05-10T20:36:35","date_gmt":"2021-05-10T20:36:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=59218"},"modified":"2021-05-10T20:36:36","modified_gmt":"2021-05-10T20:36:36","slug":"education-in-syrias-afrin-compulsory-turkish-language-ineffective-staff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/59218\/","title":{"rendered":"Education in Syria\u2019s Afrin: compulsory Turkish language, ineffective staff"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>In order to be able to teach her six-year-old daughter who faces difficulty pronouncing the strange letters, Razan Hamo (a pseudonym), a housekeeper from Afrin, is trying to train herself to write in Turkish. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city of Afrin has been witnessing declining education and damaged schools since 2018, during an invasion by Turkey and Turkish-backed armed groups. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hamo is making every possible effort, either watching YouTube channels or reading brochures to learn the Turkish language in order to help her daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey opened ten schools for all classes, including a school of <em>sharia<\/em> [Islamic jurisprudence], four kindergartens, and several Turkish language centers in the areas is controls in northern Syria. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Inexperienced teachers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who teach Turkish often have insufficient knowledge of the language themselves, &#8220;so how they will teach it to our children?\u201d Hamo wondered. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She added that the teacher who supervises her daughter sent audio recordings via WhatsApp to a group for her elementary class. &#8220;She made many pronunciation mistakes that, despite my poor knowledge of Turkish, I noticed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The education field in Afrin is suffering due to inexperienced and weak teachers and the failure to adapt to the Turkish language, Fo&#8217;ad al-Hesainy (a pseudonym), a school principal, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Especially for Turkish, which is a foreign tongue in Syrian north, they assign either unspecialized or underqualified teachers,&#8221; he told North Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lack of specialized teachers is attributed to the fact that most of them fled the city after Turkey took control of it for fear of being arrested, killed, or facing an unknown fate like many others before them, according to residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Changing curriculums<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents of Afrin were greatly affected after the change of the school curricula, as most of them did not send their children to schools after the inclusion of the Turkish language as an essential subject to the curriculum of 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sixth grader Hiva Hussein (a pseudonym) is frustrated by her inability to understand the intensive curriculum and achieve good grades in light of the imposition of the Turkish language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She can easily speak and write in Kurdish, which she learned during the years before the Turkish invasion and occupation, and also in Arabic, which is the language of her favorite cartoons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schools affiliated with the Turkish Hatay Education Directorate in Afrin and its villages are mainly concentrating on teaching both Arabic and Turkish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;In the elementary classes they teach Arabic, English, Math, Religion, and Turkish, in addition to Art and Sport classes,&#8221; according to the school principal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting by Farouq Hamo&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Turkish-occupied #Syria, in particular #Afrin, is facing a crisis in education as the Turkish-affiliated local governments prioritize the Turkish language and appoint weak and underqualified teachers in schools. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":59219,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"pgc_sgb_lightbox_settings":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[5,2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-59218","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-community","category-syria"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
