HAMA, Syria (North Press) – <\/strong>Summer vegetable farmers and traders in Hama, central Syria, are complaining about great recession in their crops and great difficulty in selling their products to other cities due to the diesel crisis in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hama and all areas under the control of the Syrian government have been witnessing a severe fuel crisis, as the government has reduced the cities’ allocations of petrol and diesel for more than a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No diesel<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The fuel crisis has paralyzed movement in the city of Hama and stopped transport inside and outside the city, and vehicles transporting goods to factories have stopped because of the lack of diesel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talal al-Sari (a pseudonym) a driver working on the Hama-Damascus line, said that before the diesel crisis, he used to transport several shipments of vegetables and fruits to Damascus, Homs, and other governorates every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My work now has stopped between governorates due to the diesel crisis,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The driver has to buy diesel on the black market at a price of between 2000 and 3000 Syrian pounds per liter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, the costs of transportation between the Syrian governorates have increased several times over, and transportation fees for cars from Hama to Damascus have reached 500,000 Syrian pounds, while it was between 150 and 200,000 SYP before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transportation fees for “Kia 4000” freight cars have increased to 250,000 SYP, while it was between 60 and 80,000 SYP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Piled goods<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rayan al-Warar (a pseudonym), a trader in al-Hal market in Hama, said, “Our goods are piled up in the market and it is not possible to take them to the other governorates.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trader pointed out that selling is now dependent on al-Hal market in the city, which “does not consume a quarter of the products coming to it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is the season of onions now, and there are dozens of tons of onions in al-Hal market that no one buys, and after several weeks the season of potatoes will come. If the situation continues like this, the potatoes will be piled up in the market without being sold as well,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other merchants told North Press that this is the first time that vegetables are piled up in al-Hal market without being shipped, as they now refuse to buy all quantities from farmers “because they are large quantities and the market cannot have them, so they buy according to the market needs.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The piling of vegetables is driving some farmers to set up stalls in vegetable markets and sell their goods themselves in order to sell larger quantities of products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al-Warrar linked the reason for the high prices of vegetables to the fact that farmers “raise prices to compensate for their loss, as most of the products were destroyed due to the lack of transportation to other governorates.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The farmer will have to pay more transportation fees than the price at which he sells the goods, so he is forced to raise their price in the city and not transfer them to other governorates to avoid large losses.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saeed al-Khaled (a pseudonym), a farmer in Hama, is seriously considering selling his land and working in another profession not related to agriculture if he continues to lose money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He lost hundreds of thousands Syrian pounds due to the transportation crisis and the high prices, as he finds it difficult to find vehicles at suitable prices to transport his vegetable crop to al-Hal market in the city, al-Khalid said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Car owners ask for 20 to 40,000 Syrian pounds to transport the crop from the land, which is about 20 km from al-Hal market, and this amount is very large,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The failure of the Syrian government to provide farmers with diesel and the inability of some of them to buy it on the black market led to vegetable crops being destroyed and wilting because they were not watered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jamal al-Auf (a pseudonym), a farmer in al-Sharia orchards in the southern countryside of Hama, said that the crops “withered from thirst due to the lack of diesel to run the wells.  I went to all the gas stations but they all refused to give me any diesel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al-Aouf is unable to buy diesel on the black market because of the high price, as the price of a liter has reached three thousand Syrian pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al-Auf asked the Agriculture Directorate in Hama several times to provide him with diesel for watering the lands. “Their response was that there is no diesel now, and when it is available, it will be distributed.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
