JIL AGHA, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>Mihriban Yussef, IDP from the city of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain), is busy in picking summer vegetables crops and getting ready to plant other types, where she transfers the seedlings to places designated for planting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, Youssef, who has experience in agriculture, rented 40 acres of a land in the village of Derona Agi in the countryside of Jil Agha town, east of Qamishli, to start work on its agricultural project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Projects need support<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Youssef said that the first vegetable season of the summer has ended, and the production will be sold in the coming few days in the market of Jil Agha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She considered her experience successful in light of the limited resources available, as she tries to benefit from two summer seasons, where she is in the process of planting cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and eggplant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is trying to cultivate new varieties of crops, such as sesame, potatoes, onions, and re-try cotton cultivation in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She aspires to expand its project if it is adopted by a party, and provides it with seeds and fertilizers, whose prices are very high. “We reduce the amount given to the cultivated area due to the high cost of fertilizer, which will negatively affect production,” according to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local farmers believe that growing seasonal summer vegetables in the region would address the problem of closing crossings and the lack of vegetable imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to these farmers, their “simple projects” need support and attention from the Agriculture Board and organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSuch seasonal crops are able to cover the region’s needs locally, if appropriate support is provided,\u201d Youssef noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Why we have to sit down and wait for the crossings to open to import our needs though we have all elements for agriculture?” She indicated that the presence of the local product in the area reduces the burden on the people in terms of low vegetable prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jobs opportunities  <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, such projects can provide many job opportunities, “work in this field is beneficial for the producer and the consumer,” according to farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Syrian government has been closing the three crossings with the Autonomous Administration areas; al-Tayha in Manbaj, Tabqa crossing and Albu Assi, north Tabqa since March 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Russian-Iranian conflict over the crossings’ revenues is the cause of the government\u2019s closure of the crossings, sources from the Autonomous Administration previously told North Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The markets of northeast Syria witnessed a rise in the prices of vegetables and fruits after the closure of the crossings, as traders were forced to import various vegetables and fruits from other sources, such as the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, with greater costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muhammad al-Mehaimid, 35, a farmer from the village of Shabak in Jil Agha countryside, has been busy preparing for the summer season by cooling the land and plowing it since the beginning of April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al-Mehaimid has grown watermelon, cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers, as some needed 45 days to be produced, and some needed two months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The farmer pointed out that “the costs of agriculture are exorbitant, starting from processing and ending with production. The crops need watering and fertilizer, but everything has become in dollars ,but we receive no support at all.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There are some agricultural pests that kill the crops, so medicines and pesticides must be provided at reasonable prices so that these projects can be done,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Ahmad Abdullah, an official of the Agriculture Committee in the town of Jil Agha, said that their support is limited to providing fuel only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pointed out that there is “a study to count such projects in the coming period to provide the necessary facilities.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
