{"id":58577,"date":"2021-04-29T21:05:22","date_gmt":"2021-04-29T21:05:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=58577"},"modified":"2021-04-29T21:05:23","modified_gmt":"2021-04-29T21:05:23","slug":"turkey-weaponizes-water-against-northeast-syria-raqqa-civil-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/58577\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey weaponizes water against northeast Syria: Raqqa Civil Council"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>RAQQA, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>On Thursday, the Raqqa Civil Council said that Turkey is using water as a weapon to blackmail and put pressure on the Autonomous Administration of North and East in Syria (AANES).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, the Council said that Turkey&#8217;s use of water as a weapon against the region came after the failure of the military intervention to achieve its goals, and that this action falls within the Turkish hostile policy towards the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statement referred to the international agreements on the equitable distribution of water between countries through which rivers pass, and to the 1987 agreement signed between Syria and Turkey. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statement warned of disaster consequences for the region, especially for the agricultural sector, and large areas of agricultural lands to be out of service if the water of the Euphrates River continues to be hold from flowing towards Syrian territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statement also denounced the ongoing Turkish violations against the region, and demanded the international organizations and the countries involved in the Syrian issue to assume their responsibilities and push the Turkish government to stop its practices against the Syrian people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier today, Hammoud Hamadin, official at Tishrin Dam, <a href=\"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/58568\/\">warned of a &#8220;humanitarian disaster&#8221;<\/a> with the summer coming, as a result of the drinking water cuts, food insecurity in the areas along the banks of the river, the inability to irrigate crops, and the power cut-off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more than three months, Turkey has limited the flow of the Euphrates into Syria, depriving large numbers of people of usable water. <a href=\"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/58549\/\">Turkey reduced the flow of water from the Euphrates River<\/a> into northeast Syria\u2019s dam gradually, reducing the amount of water received to unprecedented lows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey keeps water in six dams, the largest of which is Ataturk Dam, the second largest in the Middle East, with a storage capacity of 48 billion m\u00b3, violating the international agreement they signed with Syria in 1987 which stated that Syria\u2019s share of water coming from Turkey is 500 m\u00b3 per second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The water flow to the Euphrates River is now limited to less than 200 cubic meters, according to the General Administration of Dams in Northeastern Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting by Ammar Abdullatif<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The statement referred to the international agreements on the equitable distribution of water between countries through which rivers pass. #Syria #Turkey <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":58578,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"pgc_sgb_lightbox_settings":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[5,2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-58577","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-community","category-syria"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
