in Idlib, northwest Syria, suffer from the high prices of medicines and the lack of treatment centers to secure donations of their blood type, in addition to psychological pressure and community revulsion as a result of the symptoms they witness including fatigue, facial deformities, and jaundice of the face and eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thalassemia patients sometimes need plasma donations to survive, and every delay in obtaining this treatment can risk their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lack of treatment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Osama Aslan, an IDP from Mar&#8217;arat al-Nu&#8217;man, has two children who suffer from thalassemia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aslan told North Press, &#8220;My two children need plasma exchange once a week, so I head to Idlib, and this increases my financial and psychological burdens including the costs of transportation, medicine, and medical analysis.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The father is forced to look for a blood donor if the blood group is not available in the center where he treats his children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I cannot always obtain the medicine for thalassemia (iron pills and deferoxamine injections), so I sometimes buy them for more than 50 US dollars per month,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Financial difficulties force Aslan to delay the plasma exchange for his children &#8220;causing them chronic anemia, pain in their bodies, paleness, bone abnormalities, and developmental delay.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ten-year-old daughter of Fatima al-Sattof is suffering from the same disease, and the long distance from the treatment center increases their suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I have been following my daughter\u2019s treatment since birth, and what hurts me the most is that this disease has no cure, &#8221; al-Sattof, who is residing in Haram, told North Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The daughter&#8217;s sufferings are not limited to the pains and difficulty of treatment, but they also extend to bullying from her schoolmates, because they cannot distinguish between the symptoms of thalassemia and other infectious diseases such as hepatitis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahmed Arafat, a doctor operating in a center for thalassemia treatment in Idlib, said, &#8220;Thalassemia, also known as Mediterranean anemia, is a non-contagious disease.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He pointed out that the disease arises due to genetic factors often resulting from cousin marriage, or is passed from parents to children if they carry the traits of the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The patient requires life-long treatment, and the patient has an enlarged spleen and bone deformation; the condition may even result in their death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those with thalassemia stay long hours in hospitals for regular blood transfusions, while others need to exchange plasma every two weeks or each month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The need for blood for patients differs according to the degree of infection, the most important complications of the disease, liver and kidney dysfunction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The high level of iron in the body and its deposition on the heart muscle is one of the most dangerous matters that the patient may face, and causes complications, so they are given drugs to expel iron from the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The doctor pointed out that Idlib has two centers for blood transfusion; the Idlib and Bab al-Hawa centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The centers obtain their needs of different blood groups via donation campaigns organized by the centers from time to time, in light of the lack of support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The number of patients who visit the center every month in the city of Idlib is about 550,&#8221; Arafat stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stressed that the only treatment for this disease is &#8220;a bone marrow transplant if a donor is available, which is an expensive operation and there are no such
