DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Syrian government invests the living and economic crises in its areas of control to enhance its security grip, residents and activists in the Syrian capital, Damascus, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They believe that the international sanctions seek to impose pressure that leads the government to abdicate amid absence of a final solution to the continuing crises even after a decade of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government-held areas are witnessing crises due to the shortage of gas, bread and fuel, which, according to observers, have posed a major challenge to the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investing circumstances<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hazem Ne’me (a pseudonym), a journalist lives in Damascus, believed that “such crises strengthen the regime and not weaken it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Despite its inability to secure the most basic necessities of life for the people, the government is managing these crises and exploiting any conditions for its benefit,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ne’me added that a large part of the crises in the government-held areas were “fabricated by senior government officials with the aim of consolidating an iron grip on the people.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The regime deludes people that any danger threatening its existence will mean that all life requirements will disappear. It links its existence to the provision of living requirements,” he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March, the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, warned that Syria remains a “living nightmare”, and that about 60% of Syrians are at risk of hunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is impossible to fully fathom the extent of the devastation in Syria, but its people have endured some of the greatest crimes the world has witnessed this century. The scale of the atrocities shocks the conscience,” he said at a press conference at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soft power<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Shahin al-Turkmani (a pseudonym), a human rights activist in Damascus, ruled out that the crises in the government areas would “overthrow Bashar al-Assad.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The international community is “not serious” in finding a definitive solution to the Syrian issue, as the US and European countries deal with Damascus “with soft power,” he told North Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If the international community was serious about toppling the regime, it would have toppled it a long time ago, but the lack of an alternative and the controversy of the association of Syrian opposition groups with extremist groups are all factors that raise Western concerns,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In mid-June 2020, a series of US sanctions, “Caesar Act”, were imposed on the Syrian government and its partners and supporters, while other sanctions were issued by European countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In mid-March, Muhannad Hadi, the UN Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syrian Crisis, said during a press interview published on the UN website, that the solution in Syria “is not humanitarian, but rather it must be political<\/a>.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the 10th<\/sup> anniversary of the start of the protests in Syria, the US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, accused the Syrian government of obstructing any peaceful solution to the “Syrian crisis”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There is only one reason we have not been able to enact this solution and resolve this crisis: the Assad regime’s refusal to engage in good faith,” she said during a Security Council briefing on Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International considerations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fadi Saif al-Din (a pseudonym), a graduate of the Faculty of Media in Damascus, said that the US position on the Syrian issue depends on some considerations, the most important of which is keeping the southern front with Israel calm, weakening Iran’s role, and preventing the regime and the Russians from reaching the oil and gas fields in northeastern Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Any matter outside these principles is outside the considerations of the US administration, and therefore any talk about an indication of the fall of the regime is not forthcoming in the foreseeable future.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March, Deputy State Department Spokesperson, Jalina Porter, told North Press that the US does not see any solution to the Syrian conflict except through a political settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Porter denied that her country’s administration has no intention to lift the sanctions on Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saif al-Din suggested increasing Western pressure on the Syrian government after the upcoming presidential elections, which are scheduled to take place between mid-April and mid-May, amid American and European refusal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The international community will increase its pressure on the Syrian regime not to topple it, but to push it toward making concessions that may in turn, push for a political solution based on Security Council Resolution 2254,” he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
