{"id":56865,"date":"2021-03-31T19:02:46","date_gmt":"2021-03-31T19:02:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=56865"},"modified":"2021-03-31T19:02:47","modified_gmt":"2021-03-31T19:02:47","slug":"russia-tries-to-pressure-through-closing-crossings-aanes-official","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/56865\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia tries to pressure through closing crossings: AANES official"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> On Wednesday, a prominent official in the Autonomous Administration in North and East Syria (AANES) stated that the opening of border crossings in Syria is out of the hands of the US administration, and that the closure of government crossings is a Russian attempt to put pressure on the AANES.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe opening of border crossings in Syria is out of the hands of the US administration, as it requires a decision from the UN Security Council,\u201d AANES Spokesperson Luqman Ahmi, told North Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On March 29, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken demanded the reopening of border crossings in Syria to bring in humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe decision of opening crossings in the Security Council is usually faced with a Russian veto,\u201d Ahmi added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf the US administration wanted to open the crossings, it could open them by enforcing the humanitarian law that is above the Security Council,\u201d he referred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In July, Russia and China used their veto in the UN Security Council to reduce the number of entry points for humanitarian aid into Syria that do not require Damascus\u2019s approval to one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This point is located near the Turkish border in Bab al-Hawa; it allows aid to be delivered to northwestern Syria, which is controlled by Turkish-backed armed groups and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blinken, chairing the UN Security Council\u2019s monthly session, called for the reopening of the al-Ya\u2019roubiya crossing on the Syrian-Iraqi border and Bab al-Salama on the Syrian-Turkish border, which were closed in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These crossings \u201cprovide assistance to 4 million Syrians and 1.3 million Syrians, respectively,\u201d Blinken said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is a Russian-Iranian conflict over the revenues of crossings,\u201d Ahmi said when asked about the Syrian government\u2019s closure of its crossings with the AANES.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe crossings were closed by Russia implementing the agreements of Doha between Turkey, Russia and Qatar in an attempt to put pressures on the AANES,\u201d he pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since March 21, the Syrian government put restrictions on the movement of civilians and trade in three crossings linking its areas of control with the AANES-held areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting by Khalaf Ma\u2019o<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An official from #Syria\u2019s Autonomous Administration stated that the closure of government crossings is a Russian attempt to put pressure on the #AANES.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":56866,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"pgc_sgb_lightbox_settings":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[39,3,2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-56865","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-home","category-politics","category-syria"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
