{"id":56765,"date":"2021-03-30T07:20:55","date_gmt":"2021-03-30T07:20:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=56765"},"modified":"2021-03-30T07:20:56","modified_gmt":"2021-03-30T07:20:56","slug":"us-envoy-to-syria-stresses-importance-of-supporting-sdf-solving-hawl-camp-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/56765\/","title":{"rendered":"US Envoy to Syria stresses importance of supporting SDF, solving Hawl Camp crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>On Monday, US Special Envoy to Syria John Godfrey held a telephone briefing in which he stressed the importance of supporting the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Godfrey explained during the briefing that the meeting\u2019s agenda will focus on the continued fight against ISIS in Iraq in Syria, both militarily and in terms of regional stabilization, and the budget for 2021 for Iraq and Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The secretary also mentioned increasing ISIS activity in Mozambique, where hundreds of ISIS militants stormed the town of Palma and killed dozens of people on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Godfrey described the Coalition\u2019s campaign against ISIS as \u201ca major success to date,\u201d adding that \u201cthough ISIS remains a threat, the group\u2019s capabilities have been significantly degraded\u201d and that \u201cmillions of Iraqi and Syrian civilians have been able to return to their homes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also stressed the continuity of the US partnership with the SDF, stating that the US continues \u201cto support them in the Coalition\u2019s fight against ISIS and the SDF continues to do great work in maintaining pressure against ISIS in the northeast part of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commenting on the wave of violence in northeast Syria\u2019s Hawl Camp that has left 47 people dead since the beginning of the year alone, Godfrey referred to Hawl Camp as \u201can international problem that requires an international solution,\u201d and urged countries to both support humanitarian agencies providing aid to the camp and consider repatriating their citizens in the camp \u201cin order to help relieve the burden on our local partners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The briefing came as a discussion of a virtual meeting of the foreign ministers of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS Small Group, which will be co-hosted by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and the Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sophie Wilmes on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prepared by Lucas Chapman<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 On Monday, US Special Envoy to Syria John Godfrey held a telephone briefing in which he stressed the importance of supporting the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS).
