{"id":52946,"date":"2021-01-13T20:52:02","date_gmt":"2021-01-13T20:52:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=52946"},"modified":"2021-01-13T20:52:03","modified_gmt":"2021-01-13T20:52:03","slug":"greek-fm-turkey-has-not-asked-for-east-med-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/52946\/","title":{"rendered":"Greek FM: Turkey has not asked for east Med talks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ISTANBUL, Turkey (North Press) &#8211; <\/strong>A spokesman for the Greek Foreign Ministry, Alexandros Papaioannou, recently denied receiving any invitation from Turkey to hold preliminary talks regarding the eastern Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that a new round of talks will start between Turkey and Greece during this month in Istanbul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The talks aim to find a solution to all problems in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, according to Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The 61st round of talks will take place on January 25 in Istanbul,&#8221; the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement of the Turkish Foreign Ministry was preceded by an invitation by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, on Monday, for Greece to participate in preliminary talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cavusoglu stressed in press statements that it is important to discuss equality in sovereignty and achieving a two-state solution on the island of Cyprus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;60 rounds of negotiations have been conducted between Turkey and Greece on preliminary talks, and the negotiations have stopped after Alexis Tsipras became prime minister, but they returned to the agenda following developments in the eastern Mediterranean,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following these Turkish invitations to Greece, Britain and the European Union expressed their support for the talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">European Commission spokesman Peter Stano said that the European Union will support Greece, if requested to do so during the upcoming preliminary talks with Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">British Minister of State for European Affairs Wendy Morton welcomed Turkey and Greece&#8217;s decision to resume exploratory talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Official Turkish media indicated that the first round of exploratory talks between Ankara and Athens began in 2002, and the last round (No. 60) took place on March 1, 2016 in Athens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Negotiations continued between the two countries in the form of political consultations, without returning to an exploratory framework again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Every time, with the approach of any international entitlements or meetings of the European Union regarding the eastern Mediterranean, Turkey seeks to send messages through which it tries to win the affection of the European side,&#8221; a Turkish source who preferred to remain unidentified said in a phone call with North Press that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He pointed out that President Erdogan also sent similar messages, but to the European Union, to open a new page and restore relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier in December, European Union leaders agreed at a summit meeting to prepare a list of limited sanctions against Turkish figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These sanctions are due to the dispute between Turkey and Greece and Cyprus over the continuation of Turkish exploration in the eastern Mediterranean, but the European Union has postponed discussions on imposing any sanctions until March 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting by Serdar Hadid<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GreeceMFA denied Turkish claims that they had been invited for preliminary talks on the eastern #Mediterranean conflict over Turkish exploration in the region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":52947,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"pgc_sgb_lightbox_settings":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-52946","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-middle-east"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
