{"id":44694,"date":"2020-03-17T09:10:38","date_gmt":"2020-03-17T09:10:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=44694"},"modified":"2020-03-17T09:10:38","modified_gmt":"2020-03-17T09:10:38","slug":"Residents of Sheikh Maksoud neighborhood live in destroyed houses after years of bombing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/44694\/","title":{"rendered":"Residents of Sheikh Maksoud neighborhood live in destroyed houses after years of bombing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:justify\"><strong>Aleppo &ndash; North-Press Agency<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Zain al-Abidin Hussein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">\nSome residents of Sheikh Maksoud, a Kurdish neighborhood north of Aleppo, still live in their destroyed houses as a result of the bombing and attacks by armed opposition groups on the neighborhood during previous years, despite their lack of the simplest housing conditions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">Haytham Mardelli, one of the neighborhood&#39;s residents, told North-Press that he did not leave his house which was destroyed by the bombing, like other houses in the neighborhood from which their residents have fled to become &quot;strangers in their own country.&quot;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">\n&quot;I have four children. My house was bombed and I have not been able to repair it yet. We currently live in one room, and despite all of this we stayed in the neighborhood,&quot; Mardelli said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">Some residents, took emergency and basic measures to stay in their houses, such as covering windows and doors with curtains or settling in a room that was not completely destroyed, in light of the high costs of restoration and construction that houses need, which are estimated at millions of Syrian pounds, according to the residents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">Suad Hassan, a member of the co-presidency of civil society institutions in Sheikh Maksoud neighborhood, told North-Press that the first attack on the neighborhood was in 2012, focused on Mukhabarat Street, &quot;where residents of the neighborhood carried weapons only to protect themselves.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">In November 2016, the People&#39;s Protection Units (YPG) and the Women&#39;s Protection Units (YPJ) took control of areas in the neighborhoods of Sheikh Khidr and al-Hulluk, Bustan al-Basha, al-Haidariya, and parts of Ashrafiya and Bani Zayd, of which were being bombed by armed opposition groups. Thus, the neighborhood was secured and protected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">\nlast February, Syrian government forces announced in a statement that they had taken full control over dozens of towns in the western and northwestern countryside of Aleppo, so that the Turkish-backed armed groups would move away from the surrounding of the city and its neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Aleppo &ndash;
