North Press Agency<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\"><strong>Fawaz al-Oukla<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">Farmers in the eastern countryside of Raqqa have suffered from a decline in agricultural production for several years due to the low level of irrigation water from the main canal, in addition to the increase in the prices of agricultural supplies, on which most of the residents of the eastern area of Raqqa depend.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">Abdulrahman al-Mustafa, a 38-year-old farmer from the village of Jdeidet Kiheit 35km east of Raqqa, said: &quot;The price of diesel oil in the black market reached 200 Syrian pounds per liter, which made the cost of plowing each acre 5,500 Syrian pounds.&rdquo; &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">The price of chemical fertilizer increased to 25,000 pounds per bag, while the price of Calamine herbicide amounted to one thousand pounds per liter, and the Atlantis brand to 2,600 pounds, according to al-Mustafa.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">He added that the price of wheat seeds, which is grown by more than 60% of the region&#39;s farmers, has reached 225 Syrian pounds per kilo in the black market.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">The main problem for farmers remains the level of the main irrigation canal, which is fed through engines from the Euphrates river to transport water to farmers&#39; lands through sub-channels.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">Qaddour al-Hawash, a 45-year-old farmer from al-Karama town 30km east of the Raqqa city, told North-Press that residents of the area have repaired the main canal that was sabotaged since 2013 by Free Syrian Army groups, which controlled the region at that time.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">He added that the lack of access to water in agricultural fields, along with high prices for agricultural materials such as fertilizer, seeds, and agricultural medicines, led to a decline in crop production.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">Abd al-Dawash, an employee of the Irrigation and Agriculture Committee in the eastern area, said that they are working &quot;to clean the course of irrigation canals from algae and dirt, which hinders the rapid and regular access of water to agricultural land.&quot;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">Abdulqader al-Jejan, co-chair of the Irrigation and Agriculture Committee in the al-Karama area, explained that the main problem in securing water access to agricultural lands, and the lack of crop production, lies in a repeated fracture in the main canal near the village of Marouda in the al-Hamarat area of the eastern Raqqa countryside, which has been fixed most of the time by the committee.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">&quot;We are suffering from a major problem which lies in the lack of staff, lack of machinery, and the failure of some farmers to respond to the payment to the Department of Irrigation and Agriculture,&quot;
