{"id":37891,"date":"2019-09-14T16:27:04","date_gmt":"2019-09-14T16:27:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=37891"},"modified":"2019-09-14T16:27:04","modified_gmt":"2019-09-14T16:27:04","slug":"Christians celebrate the Exaltation of the Cross churches of Qamishli ","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/37891\/","title":{"rendered":"Christians celebrate the Exaltation of the Cross churches of Qamishli"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Qamishli &#8211; North-Press Agency&nbsp;<\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Reem Chamoun<\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Christians in the city of Qamishli on Friday have commemorated the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, by practicing the rituals of setting fire and reciting of special prayers and religious hymns.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the evening of September 13th of each year Christians commemorate this feast throughout the world, as this occasion dates back to the fourth century AD, specifically in 326 AD.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The Story of Discovery<\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The priest Malky Eshu explained the symbolism of this celebration and its rituals to North-Press, he said that this feast has a sacred symbolism to the Christian life, which it had begun during the reign of King Constantine, where paganism was very widespread, so that wars were waged between the king and the Persians, then suddenly the sign of the cross showed in the sky, indicating the victory of King Constantine.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He added: &#8220;The cross was depicted on all armors, weapons, and flags of the army. As a result of this victory, the king issued a decree that the official religion of the Roman state should become Christianity after the paganism was widespread at that time&#8221;.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;The mother of the king, Helena, was a believer in Jesus Christ and took upon herself to excavate the Holy Cross that he was crucified on, after he was placed in an unknown place by the Jews of Jerusalem following the crucifixion. She asked her son, the king, to be accompanied by an army to Jerusalem in order to help her with her search of the Holy Cross,&#8221; the priest said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Queen Helena began her search journey for the cross, and many Jews were questioned, but without reaching any desired results.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Until she was advised to go to an elderly man named Judah, who was well aware of the history and events of the city of Jerusalem.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the priest Eshu, Judah guided the Queen to the place of the Holy Cross, which was in an underground place where the soldiers dug and took out three crosses. They did not know which one of them was for Jesus.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, a funeral procession was passing by, so the Queen asked to put the dead on the crosses to find out the wanted one, the soldiers put the dead on the first cross then the second one, but when he was placed on the third cross, the dead woke up. This was evidence to the discovery of the true cross of Jesus Christ; thus a part of the cross was taken and transferred to Constantinople while the other part remained in Jerusalem.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The priest Eshu says about the reason for setting fire on this occasion, &#8220;fire was the sign for spreading the news of discovering the Holy Cross at that time&#8221;.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;The soldiers were divided into teams, each team was searching in a certain place; upon order of Queen Helena and King Constantine, they agreed to set fire as a sign when a team finds the cross, which in turn make the other teams stop searching,&#8221; he said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Angel Baho, one of the attendants at the feast in Qamishli expressed her joy of the occasion, pointing out that she and the Christians are proud of the Cross because &#8220;the Christ sacrificed himself for us and he was crucified on the cross.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Imad Hanna, another attendee said that the cross is the power of Christians because Christ has become a bridge between earth and heaven once he was&nbsp; crucified on the cross<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Samira Korea pointed out that the Cross means the salvation for Christian and the symbol of power and glory, she said: &#8220;The Cross of the Lord is the power that we gain from the Lord Jesus,&#8221; indicating that the discovery of the Cross is the greatest power of Christians.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Several ceremonies were held in the city of Qamishli, one was in Saint Charbel church in the village of al-Watwatiyah and another in Saint-Ahou church in the village of Demkheyah. While the big celebration was in the Church of Virgin Mary on Friday evening in Qamishli, which was attended by a group of priests and hundreds of Christians, where a fire was set in the yard of the church beside reciting prayers and religious hymns for the occasion.
