{"id":141565,"date":"2026-09-15T10:14:33","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T10:14:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=141565"},"modified":"2026-09-15T10:14:35","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T10:14:35","slug":"al-sharaa-says-syria-moves-toward-open-market-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/141565\/","title":{"rendered":"Al-Sharaa says Syria moves toward open market economy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Syrian Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa on Tuesday said the country is undergoing a transition from what he described as a \u201csemi-socialist\u201d system plagued by corruption to an open market-based economy, warning that the process may require \u201cshocking decisions\u201d whose positive effects will become evident over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al-Sharaa made the remarks while participating in the 2026 Arab Media Summit, held in Dubai from Sep. 15 to 17, where he discussed Syria\u2019s economic and political transformations and his vision for the country\u2019s next phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSyria was reborn after sanctions were lifted,\u201d al-Sharaa said, adding that sanctions imposed on the country over decades had severely affected the economy and left entire generations unfamiliar with financial transactions, banking guarantees and other tools of the modern economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Syria had spent about 60 years under what he described as \u201cadministrative corruption and poor planning,\u201d he said, adding that the country is now working to rebuild its institutions and benefit from the experiences of other countries while taking into account its own circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al-Sharaa expects the Syrian economy to reach about $50 billion in 2026, expressing his ambition to build a $200 billion economy in the coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said Syria has shifted from a country associated with captagon trade and conflict to one moving toward stability, with growing discussion of its potential as a trade corridor linking supply chains between East and West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Syria\u2019s stability \u201cserves the region\u201d and represents \u201ca shared interest for everyone,\u201d al-Sharaa said, pointing to major investment opportunities for Gulf states, neighboring countries and Europe, as well as plans for large-scale investments in Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al-Sharaa also highlighted the importance of Syria\u2019s agricultural sector, saying the introduction of modern technologies could help strengthen food security across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, he warned that an expansion of wars in the region could affect Syria\u2019s economic growth as the country continues to face the effects of war and destruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSyria will become a normal country where the economy and society grow,\u201d al-Sharaa said, expressing optimism about the country\u2019s trajectory in the coming phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By Taysir Mohammed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) \u2013 Syrian Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa on Tuesday said the country is undergoing a transition from what he described as a \u201csemi-socialist\u201d system plagued by corruption to an open market-based economy, warning that the process may require \u201cshocking decisions\u201d whose positive effects will become evident over time.
