{"id":141052,"date":"2026-09-03T16:14:28","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T16:14:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=141052"},"modified":"2026-09-03T16:14:29","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T16:14:29","slug":"u-s-hails-progress-as-syria-begins-chemical-materials-destruction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/141052\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. hails progress as Syria begins chemical materials destruction"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Syria announced on Thursday the start of destroying some chemical materials found in the country, while the United States hailed significant progress in addressing Syria\u2019s chemical weapons file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking during a UN Security Council session on the situation in the Middle East, Syria\u2019s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, described the development as a \u201chistoric moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI announce before you today a historic moment: the beginning of the process of destroying some of the chemical materials that were found in Syria,\u201d Olabi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Olabi\u2019s announcement came during a Security Council discussion of developments related to Syria\u2019s chemical weapons file and cooperation with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. Deputy Representative to the United Nations Tammy Bruce said Washington had noted \u201csignificant progress\u201d in addressing the chemical weapons file in Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States has supported efforts to identify, secure, declare and verifiably destroy materials linked to Syria\u2019s former chemical weapons program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The OPCW has been working with Syrian authorities on outstanding issues related to Syria\u2019s chemical weapons declaration and on the identification and destruction of previously undeclared chemical weapons-related materials.
