{"id":141033,"date":"2026-09-03T07:02:54","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T07:02:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=141033"},"modified":"2026-09-03T07:02:55","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T07:02:55","slug":"syria-achieves-wheat-self-sufficiency-after-record-harvest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/141033\/","title":{"rendered":"Syria achieves wheat self-sufficiency after record harvest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Syria has achieved wheat self-sufficiency for the current season after the Syrian Grain Establishment received about 2.75 million tons of wheat, exceeding the country&#8217;s estimated annual requirement of 2.55 million tons, an official said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nour al-Tawil, director of technology at the Syrian Grain Establishment, described the 2026 wheat season as exceptional, citing the large quantities received and the logistical efforts required to store and distribute the crop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe amount of wheat received, totaling 2.75 million tons, confirms the achievement of self-sufficiency for this year,\u201d al-Tawil said in <a href=\"https:\/\/alikhbariah.com\/%d9%86%d9%88%d8%b1-%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%b7%d9%88%d9%8a%d9%84-%d8%aa%d8%ac%d8%a7%d9%88%d8%b2%d9%86%d8%a7-%d8%a7%d8%ad%d8%aa%d9%8a%d8%a7%d8%ac-%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%a8%d9%84%d8%a7%d8%af-%d9%85%d9%86-%d8%a7%d9%84\/\">remarks to the state-run Al-Ikhbariya channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that the largest share of wheat deliveries came from eastern Syria, particularly Hasakah Governorate, while additional quantities were received from other parts of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al-Tawil pointed out that the establishment had prepared storage centers ahead of the harvest season to accommodate the large quantities, including through repairing and rehabilitating damaged facilities and carrying out maintenance work at existing centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authorities also worked to improve infrastructure and digital systems, train staff and organize the process of receiving wheat from farmers through storage and transportation, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The preparations helped the establishment overcome challenges encountered during the procurement process, according to al-Tawil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said efforts were also underway to distribute wheat among Syria&#8217;s governorates as widely as possible to ensure flour production and food sufficiency at the local level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement came after Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry Maher Khalil al-Hassan earlier described the 2026 wheat procurement season as exceptional in both its volume and the challenges faced during the collection process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al-Hassan said the government had ultimately succeeded in receiving and storing 2.75 million tons of wheat, achieving self-sufficiency despite logistical difficulties and what he described as some mistakes during the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The figures underscore the importance of Hasakah and other agricultural areas in eastern Syria to the country&#8217;s food supply, as wheat remains a strategic crop and a key component of bread production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Syria has faced repeated challenges in securing sufficient wheat supplies during years of conflict, displacement, drought and damage to agricultural and storage infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said the current season&#8217;s procurement and storage levels would help meet domestic flour needs and strengthen food security across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By Jwan Shekaki<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 Syria has achieved wheat self-sufficiency for the current season after the Syrian Grain Establishment received about 2.75 million tons of wheat, exceeding the country&#8217;s estimated annual requirement of 2.55 million tons, an official said on Wednesday.
