Bogot\u00e1 cited regional instability and the Golan\u2019s strategic importance to Israel\u2019s security as grounds for the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement was made shortly after the inauguration of Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella, who has pledged to strengthen relations with Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed Colombia\u2019s decision on Tuesday. In a video posted on X, Netanyahu said, \u201cThe Israeli flag flies here and will continue to fly here, because this is our land,\u201d while pointing to a map of the Golan Heights. He also invoked the Israeli slogan \u201cThe people are with the Golan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar also described Colombia\u2019s decision as \u201chistoric\u201d and said he would work to encourage other countries to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israel captured most of the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 war and extended its laws to the territory in 1981, a move widely regarded internationally as annexation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United Nations does not recognize the annexation. Security Council Resolution 497, adopted in 1981, declared Israel\u2019s decision to impose its laws and administration on the Golan \u201cnull and void and without international legal effect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Syria, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have condemned Colombia\u2019s decision.
