{"id":139976,"date":"2026-08-08T07:28:22","date_gmt":"2026-08-08T07:28:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=139976"},"modified":"2026-08-08T09:03:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T09:03:11","slug":"lebanon-israel-agree-shortlist-for-hezbollah-disarmament-monitors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/139976\/","title":{"rendered":"Lebanon, Israel agree shortlist for Hezbollah disarmament monitors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Lebanon and Israel agreed on a shortlist of countries that could deploy troops to verify Hezbollah\u2019s disarmament under a U.S.-brokered agreement, a Lebanese official said on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official, speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/lebanon-israel-agree-shortlist-countries-that-could-send-troops-verify-hezbollah-2026-08-07\/\">Reuters<\/a>, said the United States will select one or more countries from the shortlist but did not disclose their names or the number of countries involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shortlist was agreed during meetings between Lebanese and Israeli officials at the U.S. embassy in Rome this week, as part of talks on implementing a June 26 agreement linking Israel\u2019s gradual withdrawal from Lebanon to the disarmament of Hezbollah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hezbollah, which is not party to the agreement, has rejected calls to surrender its weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lebanese official said Beirut had also rejected an earlier proposal to use private security companies to monitor the group\u2019s disarmament, insisting that any third-party monitors must be countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official said discussions are still needed on the number of foreign troops, their deployment and coordination with the Lebanese Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States and Israel are also considering a new UN Security Council resolution to establish a framework for the foreign force, potentially under the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), whose mandate expires at the end of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The talks did not reach agreement on the next area for Israeli withdrawal.
