{"id":139879,"date":"2026-08-05T09:22:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T09:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=139879"},"modified":"2026-08-05T09:22:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T09:22:13","slug":"afrin-irrigation-faces-challenges-despite-maydanki-dam-water-release","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/139879\/","title":{"rendered":"Afrin irrigation faces challenges despite Maydanki Dam water release"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AFRIN, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Irrigation from Maydanki Dam in Afrin countryside, northwestern Syria, is continuing despite several operational challenges, including pump station failures, damaged irrigation infrastructure and illegal connections to irrigation lines, local officials said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Aleppo Directorate of Water Resources resumed irrigation water releases from Maydanki Dam at the end of July to begin the 2026 irrigation season and supply water to agricultural land across the Afrin plains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hussein al-Hassan, director of Maydanki Dam, told North Press that additional challenges include the need to rehabilitate parts of the irrigation network, rising operating costs and shortages of equipment and machinery required for maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said irrigation schedules are determined for each area in coordination with farmers&#8217; associations and irrigation committees to ensure fair distribution among beneficiaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Water allocations are based on crop type, soil conditions and the stage of plant growth, with distribution adjusted according to actual agricultural needs, al-Hassan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite limited water resources this year, he said available supplies are sufficient if farmers adhere to the irrigation schedule and avoid wasting water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al-Hassan said water distribution follows a rotation system, with irrigation times assigned according to a fixed timetable developed in coordination with local agricultural associations and irrigation committees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that authorities maintain regular coordination with farmers&#8217; associations, village leaders and local officials to organize water distribution, report infrastructure damage or violations and promote the protection of water facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to al-Hassan, water released from Maydanki Dam is intended to irrigate about 7,700 hectares of farmland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He urged farmers to follow irrigation schedules, avoid opening irrigation outlets without authorization, repair leaks in their own networks, adopt modern irrigation methods whenever possible and conserve water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al-Hassan said authorities are implementing a gradual plan to rehabilitate damaged irrigation networks based on available resources, prioritizing areas where residents have returned and farming activities have resumed, including villages whose irrigation systems were damaged in previous years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that if water storage levels decline, drinking water supplies will take priority, while irrigation water will be managed under a rationing program to maximize the benefit of available resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hussein Hamish, head of the Afrin Water Resources Center, told North Press that Maydanki Dam&#8217;s water level this season is acceptable compared with previous years that experienced severe shortages due to low rainfall, although it remains below ideal levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said technical assessments show the reservoir currently holds 134 million cubic meters of water out of a total capacity of 190 million cubic meters, enough to implement the planned irrigation program provided water use is carefully managed throughout the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By Rulaf Horo<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AFRIN, Syria (North Press) \u2013 Irrigation from Maydanki Dam in Afrin countryside, northwestern Syria, is continuing despite several operational challenges, including pump station failures, damaged irrigation infrastructure and illegal connections to irrigation lines, local officials said on Wednesday.
