{"id":138515,"date":"2026-06-21T07:48:03","date_gmt":"2026-06-21T07:48:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=138515"},"modified":"2026-06-21T07:48:04","modified_gmt":"2026-06-21T07:48:04","slug":"kurds-century-long-statelessness-overlooked-amid-global-solidarity-campaigns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/138515\/","title":{"rendered":"Kurds\u2019 century-long statelessness overlooked amid global solidarity campaigns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> An opinion article by David Harris published in The Telegraph on Sunday renewed attention to what he described as the long-overlooked plight of the Kurdish people, arguing that the Kurds remain one of the Middle East\u2019s most neglected national groups despite decades of repression, displacement and denied statehood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harris wrote that the Kurds, who number more than 40 million across Syria, Iraq, Turkey and Iran, have been denied an independent state for over a century, despite the recognition of Kurdish aspirations in the 1920 Treaty of S\u00e8vres following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, Kurdish-populated areas were divided among several modern states, leaving the Kurds without sovereignty and exposing them to repeated waves of persecution, cultural suppression and military campaigns, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2026\/06\/21\/kurds-real-victims-of-the-middle-east-not-the-palestinians\/\">article<\/a> highlights the contrast between widespread international mobilization for some causes in the Middle East and the limited attention given to Kurdish demands for self-determination, despite what Harris described as a history marked by genocide, chemical attacks and political exclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He noted in particular to Iraq\u2019s Kurdistan Region as the strongest contemporary case for Kurdish independence, describing it as one of the most stable, pluralistic and open parts of Iraq.
