Kurdish rights activists in Qamishli city, northeastern syria, on Sunday called for the establishment of a legal and judicial body to study the so-called \u201cArab Belt\u201d project implemented by the Baath Party in 1974 across some of the most fertile agricultural lands in Syria\u2019s Jazira region along the border with Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The call came during a dialogue session organized by the \u201cYakpar\u201d Center for Culture and Arts in Qamishli, which brought together lawyers, rights activists, and original landowners from the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cArab Belt\u201d project is widely described by rights advocates as one of the most controversial policies implemented in northeastern Syria, covering an area approximately 15 kilometers wide and 300 kilometers long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Critics say the project led to the confiscation of Kurdish-owned agricultural lands and prevented many residents from registering property in their names along the designated border zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking to North Press, Kurdish rights activist Jwan Isso said there is a need to form a legal and judicial body to examine the project from \u201clegal, humanitarian, and social perspectives,\u201d and to take practical legal steps on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are witnessing some proposals from the Syrian transitional government to address several issues, but there is a lack of seriousness in dealing with past grievances, including the Arab Belt issue,\u201d Isso said, adding that a dedicated legal body is necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For his part, lawyer Ali Iskan, who participated in the session, said the discussion titled \u201cFrom injustice to reparations\u201d was held amid renewed debate over the project in Syria\u2019s Hasakah Governorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the aim of the session is to develop legal and humanitarian mechanisms that ensure justice for those affected, including original landowners and individuals who were later granted lands under the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iskan added that participants are seeking to formulate legal recommendations based on recent statements, including remarks by Ahmad al-Hilali regarding the handling of the issue through legal channels, as well as relevant legal frameworks issued by the Syrian transitional authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On May 14, al-Hilali, spokesperson for the presidential team on the integration file, told North Press that the \u201cArab Belt\u201d issue would be addressed through legal mechanisms, noting that citizens would later be able to resort to the judiciary once the justice system becomes operational in Hasakah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3
