The anniversary has since become a symbolic platform for discussing the status, preservation and development of Kurdish in Syria.

This year’s observance comes amid heightened debate after Syria’s Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa issued Decree No. 13 on Jan. 16, describing Kurdish as a “national language.” Kurdish academics say the wording, while politically notable, does not amount to formal legal recognition that guarantees rights in education, administration and public life.

Walid Choli, a researcher at the Euphrates Center for Studies in Qamishli, told North Press that the distinction between recognizing a language as “national” and recognizing it as “official” is fundamental.

“Recognizing a language as national ties it to the identity and historical presence of a people in the country. Recognizing it as official integrates it into the structure of the state and its institutions,” he said.

Choli explained that Kurdish demands combine both dimensions: acknowledgment of the Kurdish people as an indigenous national component of Syria, and institutionalizing Kurdish within the state through constitutional guarantees that allow its use in education, administration and public services, particularly in Kurdish-majority areas.

He added that the decree represents an implicit acknowledgment of Kurdish national presence but remains insufficient without constitutional anchoring that enables formal bilingualism and clear legal pathways for implementation.

According to Choli, ambiguity in Damascus’ broader approach to the Kurdish issue during the transitional phase — especially in the context of negotiations and understandings following the March 10 agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces — has contributed to skepticism about how far the state is willing to go in recognizing Kurdish linguistic rights.

Kurdish translator and publisher Abdullah Sheikho told North Press that the term “national language” appears to be political wording designed to avoid granting equal status.

He noted to implementing instructions that limited Kurdish teaching in some areas to two optional classes per week that are not counted in final grades, while foreign languages continue to be treated as compulsory core subjects.

“This reflects a clear imbalance in how languages are valued within the education system,” Sheikho said, arguing that a mother tongue should not be treated as an extracurricular subject.

Sheikho called for Kurdish, alongside Syriac and Turkmen, to be recognized as constitutionally official languages, saying that equality in citizenship must be reflected in equal recognition of languages across state institutions, schools and public life.

He also stressed the need to establish a Kurdish language academy in Damascus tasked with standardizing terminology, supporting research, developing curricula and preserving Kurdish linguistic heritage within an official national framework.

For many Kurdish academics, Kurdish Language Day is no longer only a cultural commemoration but a political and constitutional moment, tied directly to the future shape of the Syrian state and the place of its linguistic and ethnic diversity within it.

By Abdulsalam Khoja

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – As Syrians mark Kurdish Language Day on May 15, Kurdish linguistic and academic circles are renewing demands for explicit constitutional recognition of Kurdish in the new Syrian constitution and for the establishment of a Kurdish language academy in Damascus to safeguard and develop the language institutionally.
