{"id":136970,"date":"2026-04-14T06:27:39","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T06:27:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=136970"},"modified":"2026-04-14T06:27:40","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T06:27:40","slug":"paris-court-convicts-lafarge-jails-ex-ceo-for-financing-isis-in-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/136970\/","title":{"rendered":"Paris court convicts Lafarge, jails ex-CEO for financing ISIS in Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> A Paris criminal court convicted on Monday French cement giant Lafarge of financing jihadist groups, including the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), to keep its plant operating in northern Syria during the country\u2019s war, sentencing former CEO Bruno Lafont to six years in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The court found that Lafarge, through its subsidiary Lafarge Cement Syria (LCS), paid about \u20ac5.5\u20135.6 million ($6.5 million) in 2013 and 2014 to armed groups and intermediaries to secure raw materials and ensure the movement of trucks and staff around its factory in Jalabiya in the southern countryside of Kobani, northern Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former deputy managing director Christian Herrault received a five-year prison sentence. Several former operational and security staff and two intermediaries, including Syrian businessman Firas Tlass, were also convicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Presiding judge Isabelle Pr\u00e9vost-Desprez said the payments, which were never disclosed, amounted to a \u201cgenuine commercial partnership\u201d with ISIS and contributed to the group\u2019s ability to control natural resources and finance attacks in the region and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Payments to armed groups<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the ruling, LCS made payments to intermediaries linked to the ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra, then al-Qaeda\u2019s affiliate in Syria, to allow continued operations as fighting intensified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While many multinational firms withdrew from Syria in 2012, Lafarge evacuated only expatriate staff and kept Syrian employees at the plant until September 2014, when ISIS fighters seized the facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lafarge completed construction of the $680-million plant in 2010, shortly before the uprising against former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad escalated into war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a separate 2022 case in the United States, Lafarge pleaded guilty to conspiring to provide material support to US-designated terrorist organizations and agreed to pay $778 million in fines, in what U.S. authorities described as an unprecedented corporate prosecution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lafarge merged with Swiss firm Holcim in 2015. Holcim has previously said it had no knowledge of the Syria dealings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cSingle aim: profit\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">France\u2019s National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor\u2019s Office argued during the trial that the company\u2019s actions were driven by \u201ca single aim: profit,\u201d alleging at least \u20ac4.7 million was transferred to groups designated as terrorist organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Herrault told the court the decision to keep the factory open was partly motivated by concern for local staff, saying the company did not want to abandon employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rights groups described the ruling as historic. The European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) and Sherpa, which filed a complaint in 2016 alongside former Syrian employees, said the conviction marked a turning point for corporate accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 190 former Syrian employees joined the case as civil parties. About 10 testified during the trial about working under threats of kidnapping, shelling, sniper fire and armed checkpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the court ruled they were not entitled to compensation, finding that individuals cannot be considered victims of terrorism financing under current law, leaving former staff without redress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ECCHR said the decision sets a legal precedent, affirming that French parent companies cannot evade responsibility for the actions of foreign subsidiaries when serious violations occur.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A separate judicial investigation is still underway in France into allegations that Lafarge may have been complicit in crimes against humanity, linked to atrocities committed in areas controlled by the ISIS during the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Civil society groups said they would continue pursuing accountability in that case and advocating for compensation for affected Syrian workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By Jwan Shekaki<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 A Paris criminal court convicted on Monday French cement giant Lafarge of financing jihadist groups, including the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), to keep its plant operating in northern Syria during the country\u2019s war, sentencing former CEO Bruno Lafont to six years in prison.
