They were engaged in clearing landmines and other remnants of war in the area when the explosion occurred, killing them instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The source added that al-Houshan was a defector officer from the former Syrian government forces. He had previously served within opposition ranks before joining the Syrian Ministry of Defense following the fall of Bashar al-Assad\u2019s government, later participating in operations aimed at removing war remnants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Landmines and unexploded ordnance continue to pose a persistent threat in several regions of Syria, particularly in areas that witnessed prolonged hostilities.
