{"id":136238,"date":"2026-03-17T08:02:03","date_gmt":"2026-03-17T08:02:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=136238"},"modified":"2026-03-17T08:02:06","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T08:02:06","slug":"u-s-supreme-court-to-review-end-of-protections-for-syrians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/136238\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Supreme Court to review end of protections for Syrians"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> The U.S. Supreme Court agreed on Monday to hear a case that could determine the future of deportation protections for thousands of Syrians living in the United States, in a move closely watched amid ongoing instability in Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The court announced that it will consider whether U.S. President Donald Trump can lawfully terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a program that shields nationals from deportation and allows them to work legally in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case includes around 6,000 Syrians who have benefited from the program since the outbreak of the Syrian conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TPS for Syrians was first granted in 2012 due to the war in Syria, and has been repeatedly extended because of continued violence and humanitarian concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Trump administration argued that conditions in Syria and other countries no longer justify continued protections, and that the Department of Homeland Security has broad authority to end the program. However, lower U.S. courts previously blocked efforts to terminate TPS for Syrians, citing concerns over legal procedures and whether conditions in Syria were properly assessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legal experts say the Supreme Court\u2019s decision could have far-reaching implications for how U.S. courts handle immigration policies tied to conflict zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advocates warn that ending TPS for Syrians could expose thousands to deportation to a country still grappling with insecurity, economic collapse, and fragile governance more than a decade after the conflict began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case is part of a broader push by the Trump administration to roll back protections for migrants from multiple countries, affecting hundreds of thousands of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oral arguments are expected in April, with a final ruling likely later this year.
