{"id":135564,"date":"2026-02-14T07:02:41","date_gmt":"2026-02-14T07:02:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=135564"},"modified":"2026-02-14T07:02:43","modified_gmt":"2026-02-14T07:02:43","slug":"u-s-urges-flexibility-in-sdf-damascus-integration-deal-reuters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/135564\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. urges flexibility in SDF-Damascus integration deal \u2013 Reuters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> The United States has expressed satisfaction with progress toward integrating the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into Syrian state institutions, while urging Damascus to show flexibility in negotiations, a Western official told Reuters on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Washington \u2014 which withdrew some of its forces from Syria this week \u2014 has advised Syrian Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa to avoid taking a hard line in talks with the SDF as a gesture of goodwill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the official, the U.S. view is that a degree of autonomy for Kurdish-led authorities in northeast Syria is acceptable, provided it does not undermine the central authority of Damascus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A copy of the agreement seen by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/risk-missteps-hangs-over-us-backed-ceasefire-deal-northeast-syria-2026-02-13\/\">Reuters<\/a> outlines steps for the Syrian Defense Ministry to establish a division for the northeast, integrating SDF forces into three brigades under its structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement also stipulates that 15 government security vehicles will deploy to each of the SDF-held cities of Qamishli and Hasakah, and that the \u201cintegration of SDF security forces\u201d will begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, officials on both the government and Kurdish sides said several core issues remain unresolved. These include the specific mechanism for integrating SDF fighters, the fate of the group\u2019s heavy weapons, and arrangements concerning a key border crossing with Iraq that has long served as an SDF lifeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, the SDF maintains firm control over the territories it holds in northern and eastern Syria.
