QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 The Kurdish National Council (KNC) welcomed on Sunday a presidential decree issued by Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa addressing the rights of Syrian Kurds, describing it as a \u201cpositive step\u201d toward political recognition and inclusive dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement published on its official website, the council said it \u201creceived with relief the presidential decree issued by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, which recognizes Kurds as an essential and integral part of the Syrian people.\u201d The statement noted that the decree includes acknowledgment of cultural and linguistic rights, as well as the annulment of the results of the exceptional census and the serious legal and humanitarian consequences that followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe council considers this decree a positive step, as it represents the first official approach to addressing Kurdish rights in a public and direct manner,\u201d the statement said. It added that canceling the census results could help lift historical injustices suffered by tens of thousands of Kurdish citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The council stressed that the decree represents \u201ca step on the path toward a comprehensive and just solution to the Kurdish issue,\u201d describing it as a political and national matter that requires deeper treatment based on constitutional recognition of national rights and genuine partnership in building the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It further stated that the decree could serve as a foundation for launching \u201cserious and responsible dialogue\u201d between the Syrian government and a joint Kurdish delegation, with the aim of reaching sustainable solutions that constitutionally guarantee the cultural, linguistic, national, and political rights of the Kurdish people within a democratic, pluralistic, and decentralized state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The council also emphasized the need to expand the scope of dialogue to establish a new phase based on justice and recognition of the rights of all Syrian components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In its closing remarks on Sunday, the KNC called for an immediate halt to all hostilities through a comprehensive ceasefire and urged all parties to adhere to the ceasefire agreement announced earlier. It said the current developments should be used as an opportunity to deepen political and national dialogue to address outstanding national issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
