{"id":134116,"date":"2026-01-05T06:26:39","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T06:26:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=134116"},"modified":"2026-01-05T06:26:41","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T06:26:41","slug":"syria-israel-to-resume-paris-security-talks-under-u-s-mediation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/134116\/","title":{"rendered":"Syria, Israel to resume Paris security talks under U.S. mediation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Senior Syrian and Israeli officials are set to meet in Paris on Monday to resume negotiations on a new security agreement, Axios reported, citing an Israeli official and a source familiar with the talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discussions are expected to last two days and will include Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, facing a newly appointed Israeli negotiating team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will mark the fifth round of talks between the two sides, but the first in nearly two months after negotiations were suspended due to wide gaps and the resignation of Israel\u2019s former chief negotiator, Ron Dermer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/01\/04\/israel-syria-talks-security-agreement-barrack\">report<\/a>, the talks aim to reach a security pact that would include the demilitarization of southern Syria and an Israeli withdrawal from areas it occupied following the collapse of the Assad regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The renewed effort is being driven by the Trump administration, which is pressing both sides to reach an agreement that would stabilize the border and potentially open the door to future diplomatic normalization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. Special Envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, is expected to mediate the talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sources said the resumption of negotiations followed a direct request from Trump to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during their meeting late in December 2025 at Mar-a-Lago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump reportedly urged continuity in the talks to reach a deal soon, while Netanyahu agreed but emphasized that any agreement must preserve Israel\u2019s \u201cred lines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump said after the meeting that he believes Israel and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa \u201cwill get along,\u201d while Netanyahu stressed Israel\u2019s interest in a peaceful border and the protection of Syria\u2019s Druze minority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahead of the talks, Netanyahu appointed a new negotiating team led by Ambassador to Washington Yechiel Leiter, alongside senior security advisers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By Jwan Shekaki<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 Senior Syrian and Israeli officials are set to meet in Paris on Monday to resume negotiations on a new security agreement, Axios reported, citing an Israeli official and a source familiar with the talks.
