{"id":133347,"date":"2025-12-17T05:38:45","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T05:38:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=133347"},"modified":"2025-12-17T05:38:48","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T05:38:48","slug":"trump-adds-syria-to-expanded-u-s-travel-ban-citing-security-risks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/133347\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump adds Syria to expanded U.S. travel ban citing security risks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> The White House announced on Tuesday that U.S. President Donald Trump has added Syria to an expanded list of countries subject to a full U.S. travel ban, citing security, screening, and information-sharing concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The White House said Trump signed a proclamation expanding and strengthening entry restrictions on nationals from countries with \u201cpersistent and severe deficiencies\u201d in screening and vetting, aimed at protecting U.S. national security and public safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the decision, Syrian citizens are barred from entering the United States, alongside nationals of Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, and holders of Palestinian Authority\u2013issued travel documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Laos and Sierra Leone, previously under partial restrictions, are now subject to a full ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expanded travel ban is set to take effect on January 1, 2026, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/12\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-further-restricts-and-limits-the-entry-of-foreign-nationals-to-protect-the-security-of-the-united-states\/\">the White House<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its justification, the administration cited visa overstay rates and institutional weaknesses in Syria. \u201cSyria is emerging from a protracted period of civil unrest and internal strife,\u201d the White House said, noting the lack of an adequate central authority to issue passports and insufficient screening and vetting mechanisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move comes despite Trump\u2019s earlier public pledge to support Syria\u2019s stability following landmark talks in November with Syrian Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump had said he would do \u201ceverything he could\u201d to help Syria succeed after years of war and isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, tensions escalated again after a deadly attack in the Palmyra region, where two U.S. Army soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed by a suspected Islamic State attacker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump later vowed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/133208\/\">very serious retaliation<\/a>,\u201d describing the incident as a \u201cterrible\u201d attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States maintains a military presence in parts of Syria as part of the Global Coalition against Islamic State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Palmyra attack renewed debate in Washington over security risks tied to Syria, influencing policy decisions amid shifting U.S.-Syrian political engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By Jwan Shekaki<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 The White House announced on Tuesday that U.S. President Donald Trump has added Syria to an expanded list of countries subject to a full U.S. travel ban, citing security, screening, and information-sharing concerns.
