QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Three Americans were killed and three others wounded on Saturday in an ISIS ambush targeting U.S. personnel in Syria\u2019s central city of Palmyra, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CENTCOM said two U.S. service members and one U.S. civilian were killed when a lone ISIS gunman attacked a patrol. The assailant was engaged and killed at the scene. The injured service members are in stable condition, U.S. officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pentagon<\/strong> confirmed the attack occurred while U.S. forces were conducting a key leader engagement in support of ongoing counter-ISIS operations in the region. The incident remains under investigation, with the identities of the victims being withheld until next of kin are notified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. President Donald Trump<\/strong> described the incident as a direct ISIS attack against U.S. forces in a volatile area not fully controlled by the Syrian transitional government, pledging \u201cvery serious retaliation.\u201d He said Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa was \u201cextremely angry and disturbed\u201d by the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Condemnations poured in from U.S. and allied officials. Tom Barrack<\/strong>, U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Syria, denounced what he called a \u201ccowardly terrorist ambush\u201d targeting a joint U.S.\u2013Syrian government patrol, reaffirming Washington\u2019s commitment to defeating terrorism alongside Syrian partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Members of Congress from both parties echoed the condemnation. Senator Lindsey Graham <\/strong>said the fallen Americans \u201cpaid the ultimate sacrifice\u201d to prevent ISIS from regaining a foothold, while Senator Jeanne Shaheen <\/strong>said the attack underscored the need to strengthen Syria\u2019s capacity to combat shared threats. Representative Joe Wilson<\/strong> said those \u201cstanding in the way of peace will fail.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada also voiced support. Gregory Galligan<\/strong>, Canada\u2019s Ambassador to Lebanon and Syria, said Ottawa stands with Global Coalition partners in the fight against ISIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. forces remain deployed in Syria as part of the U.S.-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, advising and assisting local partners \u2013 the Syrian Democratic forces (SDF) \u2013 and conducting counterterrorism operations aimed at preventing the group\u2019s resurgence. Despite the territorial defeat of the ISIS \u201ccaliphate\u201d in 2019, the group has maintained sleeper cells, particularly in Syria\u2019s central desert, exploiting security gaps and rugged terrain to stage hit-and-run attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Palmyra and the surrounding Badia region have long been hotspots for ISIS activity, with militants targeting Syrian forces, Coalition partners, and supply routes. Coalition forces have periodically increased patrols and air surveillance in response to spikes in attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coalition likely to tighten posture<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Security analysts told North Press that the Palmyra attack is likely to prompt a near-term adjustment in the Global Coalition\u2019s operational posture rather than a broad escalation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They expect enhanced force protection measures, including tighter movement protocols, increased intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) flights, and a renewed focus on dismantling ISIS cells in the Badia through targeted raids and precision strikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysts also anticipate closer coordination with local and regional partners to improve early warning and disrupt ISIS logistics networks. While a large-scale deployment shift is considered unlikely, experts say the Coalition may recalibrate patrol patterns and increase pressure on ISIS leadership to deter copycat attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe message from Washington is deterrence and continuity,\u201d one regional security analyst said. \u201cThe Coalition\u2019s priority will be to prevent ISIS from exploiting this attack to signal a comeback, while minimizing risks to its personnel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As investigations continue, U.S. officials insist the mission to contain and ultimately defeat ISIS will continue, even as the Coalition reassesses how best to operate in one of Syria\u2019s most volatile regions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
