Economist"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Economist Hayyan Habbaba in Aleppo told North Press on Sunday that issuing a new Syrian currency is a technical and logistical measure that will not improve the pound\u2019s real purchasing power.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Habbaba said the redenomination announced by the Central Bank\u2014removing zeros from banknotes\u2014does not alter the currency\u2019s underlying value. \u201cSuch a move cannot produce any real improvement in the purchasing power of the Syrian pound,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that the primary objective is to simplify daily transactions by reducing the physical volume of cash and easing the numerical burden created by large-denomination notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The step may also carry a psychological effect, he noted, by boosting public confidence and projecting a sense of entering a \u201cnew phase\u201d following what authorities describe as a year of stability or \u201cvictory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Habbaba, the replacement of banknotes could also help withdraw cash circulating outside the formal banking sector\u2014especially funds tied to corruption\u2014and redirect it into official channels, allowing the Central Bank greater control over liquidity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, he stressed that improving the pound\u2019s value and raising household income requires a comprehensive economic reform program, not a cosmetic currency change. \u201cI do not expect any noticeable improvement in income as a result of this step alone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The economist indicated that redenomination has no direct impact on the exchange rate, which is determined by broader indicators, including the Central Bank\u2019s foreign currency reserves, the trade balance, GDP, export and import levels, and overall monetary policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese indicators determine a currency\u2019s value\u2014not its technical form,\u201d he said, noting that economists agree any new currency issuance only succeeds if accompanied by structural reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regarding the financial and banking system, he said the next priority must be unifying exchange rates and implementing a \u201cmanaged float\u201d system, as recently signaled by the Central Bank governor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reporting by Nayef al-Bayoosh<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Editing by Jwan Shekaki<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) \u2013 Economist Hayyan Habbaba in Aleppo told North Press on Sunday that issuing a new Syrian currency is a technical and logistical measure that will not improve the pound\u2019s real purchasing power.&nbsp;
